Decorating With Feed Sacks for Fall 

Feed sacks are great for the fall and winter season because you can use them for potato sack races at festivals, as blankets over hay bales for extra seating and pillow covers too. I slipped these burlap feed sacks over a king size pillow and they were a perfect fit.

You may remember I recently used them on the fall front porch tour and in the fall entry too. Feed sacks are really inexpensive and can be used throughout the house to help add layers of texture while keeping a neutral color palate.

If you’re looking for a way to customize or personalize burlap feed sacks as pillow covers, consider using stencils and a permanent pen like a Sharpie or fabric paint pens. This project is so easy to complete it almost doesn’t need directions. But just in case you’re using a different kind of feed sack or pillowcase, we’re sharing the steps below.

Stenciled Feed Sack Pillow Covers Steps

This feed sack is made from burlap and is closed on three sides which seems to be pretty standard because they’re also used for crops like cotton and potatoes.

Firstly, slip a king size pillow into the burlap sack like you would a pillow case. Remember the pillows you use for the front porch don’t have to be super expensive or plush like you would use for your bed. These are a great deal for 2.

Then slip a piece of foam core board or cardboard between the feed sack and the pillow. This will help to protect your pillow from paint or fabric marker seeping through.

I decided to use the phrase “footloose & fancy-free” but you can use anything you want that is seasonally inspired like “happy fall y’all” or “pumpkin spice & everything nice.” Be as creative as you want to be!

You can find letters just like these at your home improvement store or order then online here.

Line the letters up to spell out your specific words or phrase and secure in place with painters tape. If you’re worried about messing up the spacing or anything consider outlining each letter with chalk or a white charcoal pencil.

Then use fabric paint pens or a permanent marker like a Sharpie to outline and fill in each letter.

Allow Plenty of Time to Dry 

When you’re finished the letter will look like something like this…

Allow the ink to dry before handling and once dry place feed sack in the dryer to “set” the ink. We have a quick dry cycle on the dryer that takes about 18 minutes.
