Coastal Dresser Makeover

It’s taken a few weeks but I finally feel like I’m really close to having the booth full again. Not totally restocked, mind you, but full. I was able to pick up a few pieces of furniture from an estate sale in September and my mom was able to find a few pieces back in our hometown too. I can’t even tell you guys how helpful it is to have people in multiple cities looking out for furniture. They’ve saved the day so many times! Anyway, one of the pieces my mom found was this sweet dresser…

This dresser is not unlike a lot of the pieces we bring home. The drawers were in good working condition but the top had water rings and scratches. I had plans to paint the top but had I wanted to leave the woodgrain on the top natural like the sea gull gray milk paint buffet we recently finished, I would have needed to sand the water rings and the scratches out prior to restaining. I just wanted to throw that out there for all my farmhouse friends that love the look of a painted bottom and wood grain/natural top.

In addition to all of those scratches, it was also super filthy. I cleaned the entire dresser with a TSP + water solution and once it was clean and dry, I painted everything with one coat of Zinsser 1 2 3 Primer.

I used a custom mix of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Duck Egg + Pure White + a smidge of Country Gray to achieve the look of sea glass. As I’ve shared with you guys before, most of my customers at The Pickers Market have homes that are coastal, water and nautical inspired. This is after two coats of paint.

I decided to paint the original wood knobs in the same color as the body but once I stood back to take a look…

I thought it was kind of boring. So, I decided to use Pure White on the wood knobs to make them stick out just a bit and it’s so much better now.

It’s always fun to see the different ways people decorate for the fall season especially if they’re living in a coastal area. I’m loving all the pumpkins around town with starfish, seahorses and shells on them.

I found the big metal piece at Kirkland’s earlier this year. Everything else has been thrifted and collected over time.
