Christmas Decoration Storage Solutions
Now that we’ve had a chance to slow down and settle in for Christmas break, it has given us a chance to think about Christmas decoration storage solutions and organizational goals.
Over the years we’ve unintentionally amassed quite a bit of Christmas decorations and while I’m always glad we take the time to decorate our home for the season, I’ll be honest, it’s the pits to have to take it all down.
I freely admit our unfinished attic is ridiculously small and our garage literally has no functional organizational system at all, period. We have way more decorations than we will ever have proper storage (or real need) for which is why I’m on a mission to declutter both spaces in the coming year.
Now, I don’t know if you guys are in a similar situation or not, but I thought we would share a few Christmas decoration storage solution options with you in case you’re also facing a garage filled with piles of delayed decision making or you’re ready to refresh your existing storage options in the new year.
Here is a list of the most commonly stored Christmas decorations items
- Christmas Tree
- Ornaments
- Wreaths
- Garland
- Stockings
- Christmas Tree Lights
- Wrapping Paper/Tags/Bows

Ok, so now that we have a few storage solution options, let’s talk about how we can plan for next year and declutter our Christmas decorations once we’re ready to put them all way…
Choose Your Holiday Home Theme This Year for Next Year & Store Accordingly – Deciding what you want your Christmas decorations to look like next year will help you stay better organized and focused all year. It will also help to save you money because you’ll only be shopping for those items you actually need instead of buying items to “make it work” or because “it was glittery and on sale.”
Edit Your Existing Decorations Before You Put Them Away – As you put your Christmas decorations away this year check for broken ornaments, lights that no longer work, stockings that are torn, garland that is damaged or wreaths that are past their prime.
Separate, Organize and Store Your Décor by Category or Use – For example, store all the ornaments together, the garlands together, the ribbons together, the wreaths together, the tabletop decorations together, the lights together and the wrapping paper together too. Make sure you’re using the best storage option for each category and take extra care to wrap all fragile items.
Detangle Your Lights with DIY Cardboard Spools or Store-Bought Reels – While a good portion of us enjoy a prelit tree, others of us look forward to stringing twinkling lights and the festive scents of a real tree each year. Checking to make sure your strands of lights work and are detangled before you put them away is another quick and easy way to save yourself time next year.
Simplify Your Wrapping Paper Game by Choosing Papers that Coordinate – If you know in advance what you want your holiday home to look like next year you might want to purchase the coordinating wrapping paper while it’s one sale this year.
That being said, you don’t necessarily have to use themed wrapping paper at all. Choosing mostly neutral colors you’ll be able to use throughout the year will not only save you storage space, it will also save you time since you’ll be able to wrap as you purchase throughout the year.
I hope these Christmas Decoration Storage Solution ideas have helped!
I know a lot of you are gearing up to enjoy the rest of the holiday season (us too) there will also be some of you ready to take your tree down on December 26th because you look forward to getting your house back in order before the ball drops of New Year’s Eve. We usually do a combination of the two.
On a side note, did you guys see all that red from back in the day? Who was that girl? I’m hoping to let some of that go this year. I’m nervous about it already but I know it needs to be desperately needs to be done.
See you guys back here tomorrow. I’ll have one last post before we take snuggle up for holiday break. Until next time, I’ll see you on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.
Many blessings,
CoCo
