How to Easily Personalize a Vintage Platter
We’re sharing how to easily personalize a vintage platter today!
My Mom and I were at my childhood home, Loblolly, trying to put the finishing touches on one of the bedrooms. Literally, everything from the headboard to the dresser and the wall art was in place, we just needed to style the nightstand and call it good to go.
After creating a new flower arrangement for the top of the nightstand we stepped back to make sure the bedroom didn’t need anything else.
But there was something about the nightstand that was “off” and I just couldn’t explain it.
Filling in the Space Above the Nightstand…
I wish I could tell you how many different things we tried to fill in the space above the nightstand.
We tried at least 10 different pieces of art in various combinations. We tried pieces of salvaged wood, baskets of flowers, vases of flowers, trays, lamps – you name it – if we had it, we tried it.
Yet nothing was really working out.
We were just about to call it a day when we decided to try this vintage platter.
It was really close to being perfect.
But again, there was something about it that just felt off and I couldn’t let it go.
After a bit of troubleshooting, my Mom and I decided we needed to find an easy way to personalize the vintage platter.
Truth be told, I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it at first. I mean, it was almost too pretty to take a chance messing it up.
But my Mom assured me several times she had only paid a few dollars for the platter at the thrift store and I would adding value not taking it away.
Moms are the best, right?
When I asked my Mom how she wanted to personalize the vintage platter she immediately choose two simple words…Loblolly Manor.
She loved it so much I thought I would share this quick and easy gift idea, in case you wanted to make one for someone special in your life too!
Here’s a look at how to easily personalize a vintage platter…
How to Easily Personalize a Vintage Platter Supplies:
- White Porcelain or Ceramic Platter
- Home Computer, Printer, Paper
- No. 2 Graphite Pencil
- Tape
- Ink Pen
- Permanent Marker
- Baking Sheet
- Wire Rack
- Oven
How to Easily Personalize a Vintage Platter Steps:
Make sure your vintage platter has been cleaned and is completely dry prior to starting this project.
Use a program like Word on your home computer to create an image or phrase. Then print it out on white computer paper using your home printer.
We used Edwardian Script and “Loblolly Manor” to easily personalize this vintage platter.
Word has a lot of great script fonts but you can also find calligraphy fonts on places like the DaFont.com or PicMonkey as well.
Next, cut out the phrase or image you’ve selected using caution and care as scissors are sharp.
Adding the Letters or Graphics…
Then flip the image over and shade using a graphite pencil.
Center the image on the vintage platter (make sure the shaded graphite portion is against the platter) and secure it in place with clear tape.
Keep in mind, this project is for decorative purposes only. Do not eat off the personalized vintage platter as it is not food safe.
Outline each image or letter with a ball point pen.
Once you’ve completed outlining each letter, carefully remove the clear tape to reveal the transferred graphic.
Use a permanent marker to color in each letter or your chosen graphic.
Setting the Ink…
Place the personalized vintage platter on a baking sheet and place it in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes so the ink will set.
Use caution and care as you remove the platter from the oven as it will be hot. Then allow the platter to cool completely on a wire rack.
Seriously so easy, right? Just think of all the seasonal and inspirational phrases you can customize!
We’ve done lots of home decor and DIY projects at Loblolly over the years, but I think this personalized vintage platter will always be a sentimental favorite.
It definitely makes me excited for all the new memories yet to come!
