DIY Flower Market Sign
Today, we’re sharing a super simple DIY Flower Market Sign that can easily help you add farmhouse charm both indoors and out!
We love flowers any time of the year but especially this time of year. As you can imagine we almost always have scraps of wood leftover from various projects.
So, creating a Flower Market sign from some of the scrap wood we’ve been collecting in the garage seemed like a great way to jump start seasonal decorating.
Signs like this are really easy to make with just a few supplies you probably already have at home.
Here’s a look at how to create a DIY Flower Market Sign…

DIY Flower Market Sign Supplies:
- Wood
- Base color paint
- Paper Towels or Paint Brush
- Gloves (optional)
- Alphabet Stencils
- Pencil
- Craft Paint
- Fine Detail Art Brush
- 220-grit Sandpaper
- Polyurethane & Brush or Paste Wax & Wax Brush
- Tarp (to cover work area)
DIY Flower Market Sign Steps:
In an effort to save some space in the garage, I’m trying to repurpose the backs of some of our other signs so they can do can double duty.
If you like to change out your signs frequently but are short on storage space you may want to try it too.
No matter what kind of wood or size your sign will be, you’ll definitely want to make sure the wood can be painted.
Also, be sure to cover your work area with a tarp to protect your space.
This color is Valspar’s Bistro White and it’s one of my favorites.
To give our DIY flower market sign an aged or weathered feel, even though the wood is new, I “painted it” by rubbing in the color with a few paper towels.
It’s somewhat messy so you’ll want to wear gloves.
If you’ve never tried this technique before, dip your paper towel into the paint.
You don’t want to dip your paper towel directly into the paint can, mind you, or you’ll probably get lint in your paint. So, keep a little bit of paint to the side.
After you have the paint on the paper towel, rub the paint directly into the wood grain.
It will not look the same or as even as if you were using a paint brush.
But that is ok.
Keep in mind, we’re going for an aged or weathered look not a freshly painted one.
Make sure to cover the entire piece of wood with paint.
You can make the wood look distressed by rubbing a small amount of paint into the woodgrain.
So, keep in mind the more paint you use the less distressed it will look.
Allow the paint to dry completely.
Then using letters, stencils or the easy transfer method found here decide how you want your letters or graphic to be placed.
Use a ruler to help you space out the letters, as needed.
Next, use a #2 lead pencil to outline each letter or transfer the graphic to the wood.
Once you have the letters or the graphic in place, use an art detail paintbrush and your choice of craft paint (we used black) to color in each letter.
Don’t worry about making your brush strokes too even.
Once you have all of the letters filled in you might want to consider adding a border around the edges.
I usually add old tobacco sticks or use picture frame molding. But if you don’t have those don’t sweat it.
You can just paint a border around the letters and your DIY Flower Market sign will look something like this…
Allow the paint from the lettering to completely dry, then using 220-grit sandpaper lightly go over the sign completely.
This will also add to the aged, weathered and worn look of your DIY flower market sign.
Finally, add a bit of furniture paste wax or matte finish polyurethane top coat to help give your sign a finished look.
Keep in mind, furniture paste wax should not be used outdoors as the wax will melt.
Keep in Mind…
If you’re using your sign outside, you’ll need to make sure you’re using a clear, exterior sealer that will hold up to the elements.
Large signs like this DIY flower market sign or even small signs that you find at your favorite Etsy shop are an easy way to change up the artwork around your home.
It’s also a fun way to celebrate the seasons without feeling like you have to go all out and decorate everything.
Small changes can make a big impact so get started on making something that’s unique for your home today!

I love your sign CoCo! I love the idea for painting with the paper towel…quick and easy! Hand Painted signs have a such a great rustic look!
Thank you, Linda! Making signs like this are so easy and can be used in so many different seasons too. Painting with a paper towel really helps to get into all the nooks and crannies of the wood but man is it messy. Thankfully, it’s worth it too 🙂 Big hugs, CoCo
I love how you hand traced your letters. You did such a fabulous job and the sign turned out so beautifully!
I really appreciate it, Heidi, thank you so much! Hugs, CoCo

Oh I am just loving this CoCo! I have to make one! Please share with the Charming Homes and Gardens party this week!
Thank you, Kim! It’s one of those super easy to make projects that can be used in multiple places. The minute our potting shed is finished, I’m going to be so excited to hang it out there 🙂 Hugs, CoCo
I have some leftover pieces of wood so I going to look for some stencils so I can try this out. I laughed out loud when I read that I shouldn’t use the wax outside because it would melt – it’s so cold here right now there is more chance of it freezing! (OK, I’m exaggerating but….Brrr!)
Oh my gosh, Jayne, I never even thought about the wax freezing! I’m going to go back into the post and include it – thanks for letting me know. It’s so hot in Florida right now you can barely walk out the front door without getting hot and sticky so I can’t even imagine having freezing temps 🙂 These signs are super easy to make and you are so creative I know you won’t have any problem at all! Hope you’ve had a fun week so far, CoCo
I absolutely love this and pinned it to my must do list!!! Thanks for sharing the inspiration at Charming Homes & Gardens!
You’re so sweet, Kristin! You could totally rock a sign like this – no problem. Hope your week has been a fun one, CoCo

Morning Coco,
Loved your sign, so cute! and what a smart idea to put a sign on the back of a sign to save on space. Your mantel looks gorgeous with your sign and lovely floral arrangements, and it was so cute outdoors in the wheel barrow as well. Fun design choices!!
Have a great day hon,
Blessings, Nellie
