Master Bedroom Refresh Reveal

Today, we’re finally sharing our master bedroom refresh reveal as we team up with some of our favorite bloggers as part of the Summer Nights Blog Hop.

A special thank you to Cecilia of My Thrift Store Addiction for hosting this event and for bringing us all together!

You can find our Spring Nesting Blog Hop post here, if you missed it.

If you’re coming over from Shelley’s blog at Calypso in the Country, welcome, we’re glad you’re here!

A Look Back…

The master bedroom is one of those spaces that has changed pretty drastically over the years.  Several years ago, it looked like this….

Then we decided to install board and batten and add a fresh coat of paint to the space as part of the One Room Challenge

Truthfully, we were in the midst of what can only be described as epic grief given my grandparents passed away during that time about 36 hours apart.

The master bedroom looked like a construction zone and so did the rest of the house.

Despite our grief, we had no choice but to finish it.  And as you can see, it greatly affected our color choices because everything felt like a snug little cave.

A Fresh Start…

While those color choices served us well for many years, we’ve been itching for a fresh start lately.

Specifically, to create a master bedroom refresh with a light, bright and airy feel incorporating subtle pops of color.

Thankfully, my bestie S found this beautiful Waverly fabric a few months ago which gave us a great place to start.

The master bedroom is truly one of the most lived in spaces in the house and it has been multifunctional for years.

For example, it’s one of the only places to watch tv. We use this dining room hutch turned library hutch to watch movies and catch up on our favorite shows.

Eventually, we’re hoping to replace the hutch with a fireplace and mantel, but we ran out of time and have turned our attention to much needed hurricane prep.

The master bedroom also doubles as a workspace in the middle of the night while struggling through bouts of insomnia.

In addition, it’s the perfect place to snuggle up while recovering from surgery, fighting a cold or the flu,

taking a mental wellness break,

or needing a soft place to fall from everything that’s happening in the world right now.

Small Changes Big Impact…

We’ve really enjoyed getting back to a slower pace of life this season and I know so many of you have too!

Most weekends we open the windows and let the coastal breezes flow through the house while listening to the birds sing.

It smells like a fabulous mix of salty marsh, lavender and summertime which feels like a small but necessary luxury these days.

Of course, there are always things we’d love to change.  I got a new sewing machine earlier this year and have been learning how to sew again.  I’d love to make some slip covers with a slight ruffle for the leather club chairs.

That said, even changing small things like repainting the dresser and creating the European farmhouse mirror makeover helped to create the light, bright and airy look we originally envisioned.

Celebrating Summer Nights…

I think sometimes we think we have to have it all figured out before we start decorating our homes.  We really don’t though.

While it definitely helps to have a vision, there is something to be said for allowing a space to evolve over time.  A space that can change as you change and rises up to meet your needs no matter season of life, you’re in.

My hope for all of us this summer is that we continue to take the time to slow down.  To enjoy each other’s company and find ways to contribute to making our communities a better place.

To spend summer nights laughing over board and card games, gathering around the table to share a meal together, making s’mores around the firepit or cozied up with a good book and simply allowing ourselves to revel in those things that are most important to us.

We’re never going to get this time back, so we may as well make it count.

Be sure to check out my sweet friend, Kelly, at The Tattered Pew next and don’t miss all the fabulous summer nights inspiration the rest of these ladies are sharing as well:

  2. Such a relaxing space! Please share the story of the photo on the nightstand.

    1. Thank you, Liz! We love and find so much inspiration from black and white photos so we try to tuck them all around the house. This one is of Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Autherine Lucy, prior to civil rights rally at Madison Square Garden, New York City in 1956. It’s a widely available copy and constantly reminds us of the value of women and how their voices of courage continue to impact us all.

  3. Coco, your gorgeous bedroom looks like such a perfect place to escape it all. I love how you shared all the pretty angles and vignettes – like that fabulous desk area. Definitely lots to pin! You have such a talent for creating a warm and inviting space. This is truly beautiful! Great hopping with you again. Take care!

    1. Such a sweet and thoughtful compliment, Shelley, thank you! It’s been a fun space to put together and even though color is not usually my thing, I’ve loved stretching myself creatively by trying to welcome soft pops of color in other spaces around the house too. I think there will be lots of naps and afternoon reading in this room this summer 🙂 Big hugs, CoCo

  4. CoCo your bedroom is absolutely GORGEOUS! To start I absolutely LOVE the floral pattern you chose for the pillows and the soft muted tones are so relaxing to the eye. This space looks so cozy and fresh and has filled me so much inspiration! But the real treat was reading your words as you walked us through your room refresh. Your words really hit home with me. Thank you for sharing your beautiful personal space and words of wisdom!

    1. You always leave the sweetest comments, Christine and I appreciate them so much. This was definitely a fun room to work on and it has such a fresh feel now too. 1. I appreciate your kind words so much, Jemma, thank you! I wish I could say decorating came naturally but as you can see throughout the various phases of this room – it takes practice. Thankfully, it’s easy to keep at it. 🙂 Super excited to try your salad recipe. It looks amazing! Hugs and happy summer, CoCo

    Cindy

    1. Thank you bunches, Cindy! We originally got that fabric to use on the front porch so I’m curious to see how it’s going to look out there now too. Thank you for your sweet words on our hurricane season as well. The US has already been through so much lately, so I hope it will be a quiet season. Sending you hugs, CoCo

  8. The bedroom turned out si beautifully, CoCo! I love the colors and fabrics and all the special pieces you brought together so perfectly! Such a wonderful space to relax!

    1. Thank you so much, Linda! It’s been such a fun space to bring together and to make it all feel fresh while using mostly the same pieces of furniture that were already there. It’s definitely going to be one of the first places I think of to take a nap or read a good book on a lazy summer day. Hugs, CoCo

  9. May I have the name of the Waverly pattern on the pillow? I love everything about this room!

    1. I really appreciate that, Pam, thank you! The floral Waverly pattern is called Emma’s Garden and from what I can tell they have it in multiple color variations. We bought this specific color variation at Joanns several months ago and it is called Violets Emma’s Garden. While the fabric is printed with the Waverly logo on the edges, it is under the Home Essentials decor fabric line at Joanns. Hopefully, this helps and is not too confusing. Let me know if you have any other questions. I’m happy to help, CoCo

  10. I love how beautifully light and airy your bedroom is, CoCo, and I understand completely the need to create a comforting space where you can snuggle up and get away from the outside world if you need to. I love the floral pattern your friend found and the little pops of colour in your bedroom. As you know, I am still completely in love with the dresser you’ve made over. What an inviting space!

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet and thoughtful words, Katerina. This space has definitely been the best place to relax and unwind of late. I’m thankful even though we mostly used all the same pieces of furniture that had been in the bedroom before we were able to give them a fresh feel with a simple coat of paint. It really helped to stretch things 🙂 Sending you hugs for a happy week, CoCo

  11. I love your amazing style Coco! The bedroom changes are lovely. Please bottle up that wonderful sea air and lavender scent and send it to Kentucky! Oh I can just imagine how wonderful that must be, sitting in your picturesque home with that fragrance filling the air. Well, I wouldn’t be sitting, I would be nosing about taking in all of the details of your amazing treasures and decor!

Thanks for always inspiring with your projects, decor and heart felt sentiments. I hope you have many relaxing summer nights ahead in your beautiful home!

    1. You’re so sweet, Amber, thank you! It’s always fun to give our spaces a bit of a refresh especially when the seasons change. This year has been nothing like I thought it would be so we’re trying to take the best parts of it and enjoy every drop of sunshine we can. Hanging out with you would be so much fun! You are welcome here any time 🙂 Sending you hugs for a happy summer, CoCo

  12. Love it all, Coco! The small touches of lavender are so pretty in the Waverly fabric. Now is that Eleanor Roosevelt and Marian Anderson in the photo? What a great touch!!

    1. You’re so sweet to say that, Stacey, thank you! It’s been fun to add a bit of color to this space. Especially, for summer 🙂 So many people have asked about that photo! It’s of Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Autherine Lucy, prior to a civil rights rally at Madison Square Garden, New York City in 1956. It’s a widely available copy and constantly reminds us of the value of women and how their voices of courage continue to impact us all. Hugs, CoCo

    1. Thanks so much, Karen! It’s been fun to pull this space together just in time for the summer months. I’m hoping we’ll be able to keep a slower pace of life all season long. Hope you’re day has been a good one, CoCo

  13. This is so beautiful Coco! I love the colours in the floral bed pillows they make the room look so fresh and inviting. Who wouldn’t want to take a break from the world and relax in this space? Pinned!

    1. Thank you, Jayne! I wake up pretty early each morning and have a shirt that says “nap queen” so finding a sweet spot for a lazy break is always high on our must-have list 🙂 Sending you hugs for a happy week, CoCo

  14. I love the light and airy look and the pretty lavender colour. I never thought of the master bedroom being where one spends most of their time but it’s true. Sadly, it’s the room that I most often overlook. You’ve inspired me.

    1. Thank you so much! You are so right spaces like these are often pushed down on the priority list. But peaceful sleep and a cozy place to relax are important no matter what the season or budget. There is always something we can do with a bit of creativity. Hope you have a great week, CoCo

  15. A very relaxing and refreshing space! My husband and I had one 3 month span a couple years back where we lost all of our grandparents in one giant fell swoop. It was HARD. The only consolation was what long and wonderful lives they had led.

    1. I completely understand how hard that must have been, Joanne. My Mom’s parents died about 36 hours apart and it totally rocked our world. We too had consolation they lived wonderful and happy lives but the grief journey felt unbearable at times. I’m so thankful we’re on the other side now and I’m sure you are too. Thanks so much for your sweet words, they are much appreciated. Hugs for you both, CoCo

  16. I love your bedroom CoCo! I’m sure it is the perfect place to unwind and relax, especially with your beautiful tufted bench and leather chair seating area! Thank you for sharing with Charming Homes and Gardens!

    1. Thank you so much, Kim! It’s been a fun and relaxing spot to cozy up in these past few weeks. Summer is definitely the perfect time to grab a lazy nap 🙂 Hugs, CoCo

  17. I am so in love with how your bedroom turned out. Looks so inviting and bright. It is true a bedroom gets the most use. I am planning to do ours soon too. Thank you for sharing the journey of putting it all together. Sorry to hear about your grandparents.

    1. Thank you so much, Meagan! I’ve been obsessed with creating spaces in our home that allow us to rest and relax with all the ups and downs of life. I know it’s an investment sometimes but giving yourself the gift of a retreat space will always be worth it. Can’t wait to see how yours comes together! Hugs, CoCo
