Simple Spring Mantel

Today, we’re sharing our Simple Spring Mantel! 

Our Spring Mantel Inspiration…

I don’t know about you but when I think about Spring I think about new life, second chances, dinner on the grounds, Easter hats and flowers.

Lots and lots of flowers!

Most especially, the azaleas my parents made us take pictures next to EVERY Easter Sunday. My sister and I would sneeze with every click of the camera ?

I was thinking about those fun memories when I created our simple Spring mantel this year and when adding Spring touches around the rest of the house as well.

The Secret to Decorating a Spring Mantel…

We know a lot of people think decorating a simple Spring mantel can be kind of tricky. But I promise, it doesn’t have to be.

Whenever I decorate our mantel in no matter what the season, I practice two simple things, every single time…

1. Visually divide the mantel into thirds and start decorating with the center portion or focal point in mind first.
2. Practice symmetry to keep it simple.

…that’s it…the big secret.

Here’s a look at how you can put these two steps together to create a simple spring mantel too…

Creating a Focal Point

Given our mantel is fairly large, I try to put a focal point in the middle that will stand out immediately.

For example:

• A piece of artwork
• Sign
• Chalkboard
• An old window
• Wreath
• A piece of architectural salvage

In this case, it’s our Flower Market sign.

If you start with the center portion first, it will be easier to balance out the sides or the other two thirds of your simple Spring mantel.

Decorate from Left to Right 

Once you have the focal point in place, start decorating the section on the left first because your eye reads from left to right.

This year, we wanted to find a way to incorporate lots of flowers. So, we used multiple containers of them.

We also wanted to use pieces that looked weathered like these vases we’ve had for a while now.

In the past though, I’ve also borrowed bunny statues from my Mom’s garden. You can see how we used them in our Spring mantel decor post here.

Another thing to keep in mind when you’re putting a simple Spring mantel together is to vary the height of all your items.  This will help to keep it interesting.

We needed to raise the flower market sign a bit, so we used these aged book pages. 

Embrace Symmetry

Now that you have the left third and the center portion in place, all you have to do is repeat those same elements on the right third of the mantel.

Again, keep it super simple and let symmetry be your guide.

To finish your spring inspired mantel, find a way to join right third of the mantel to the left and center portion.

In this case, we decided to use a bird’s nest with DIY Speckled Eggs  on the left side of the mantel because it was a nod to Spring and provides a bit of texture.

And on the right side, a faux ornamental kale and hydrangea. That way, the look would be consistent but not too matchy-matchy.

Keep in Mind

Keep in mind, borrowing home decor items even for a short season or a garden party is a good way to help stretch your budget.

Doing this also helps cut down on the number of items you’re having to store throughout the year too.

Obviously, you need to be a good steward and take care of whatever you’re entrusted with but we borrow things from each other all the time, especially seasonal items.

I hope these tips have helped to make pulling together the elements for a simple spring mantel seem a little less scary.  Just keep fluffing and working on it until you’ve created something you love.
