Americana DECOR Chalky Finish Painted Bench in Everlasting

This Americana DECOR Chalky Finish Painted Bench in Everlasting is another fun and unexpected thrifted find.

Several years ago, my Mom and I were in our hometown treasure hunting.

To be perfectly honest, the town is TINY.

There is no mall or movie theater or Starbucks.

So, thrifting and antiquing can be hit or miss.

Still, I believe in second chances.

And just the thought of being able to find something special keeps us on the hunt year after year.

Embracing an Unusual Opportunity…

Despite the lack of good shopping, there’s one opportunity store we try to check out every time we go.

The proceeds help give second chances to boys that haven’t always made good choices and it’s worth supporting.

On this particular day, we weren’t finding much though.

But as we made our way to the very back of the store, we spotted an unusual bench.

Intrigued, we immediately went over to investigate, and with a little help, we were able to set the bench upright.

The bench seat was bright red covered in roughly textured fabric.

It had no legs and was approximately 84 inches long.

I freely admit, we were stumped at first.

But quickly realized this bench was no ordinary bench.

It was a kneeling bench from an old church that had probably been used a thousand times.

Faith is literally the glue that holds my family together.

So, right then and there we hatched a plan to use the kneeling bench as extra seating in the dining room.

And after paying the cashier $15 we all but floated out of the store!

Choosing a Paint Color: Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Everlasting…

Early on, my Mom decided Loblolly should have a very tight color palette of French grays, creamy whites, camels, and European Oak.

So, we decided to use Americana DECOR Chalky Finish Paint in Everlasting on the bench.

It’s a pretty white we knew would pair well with the nubby drop cloth fabric my Mom chose for the bench seat.

We were so excited about the bench, I painted into the night.

And even after one coat of paint, we knew this bench would be special.

Adding Legs to the Bench…

Once the back of the bench had been painted, we had to figure out how to add the legs.

So, we enlisted the help of my bestie S.

The bench weighs over 100 pounds and it was all hands on deck!

With additional hardware, S was able to attach the legs to the bench using a cordless drill.

The legs are solid oak and have a slight curve.

We didn’t want anything that would compete with the spindles on the bench.

So, this subtle style was a perfect choice for us.

Once the legs were attached, I applied a coat of Annie Sloan’s Dark Furniture Paste Wax with a lint-free cloth.

It literally took just a few minutes to do but it brought such a warmth to the bench legs.

Covering the Americana Decor Chalky Finish Painted Bench in Everlasting…

I don’t know why we thought adding the legs to the bench was going to be the hardest part.

Because we wound up having to remove about 300 upholstery staples.

And let me tell you, they gave us a run for our money.

Thankfully, the foam was still in great shape.

You can see here how the bench looked after two coats of Americana DECOR Chalky Finish Paint in Everlasting and with all the legs attached.

We used a staple gun and upholstery staples to secure the drop cloth fabric to the kneeling bench.

While it’s a budget-friendly way to get the look of linen, make sure you buy a high-quality drop cloth if you decide to do a similar project.

It makes a huge difference!

Sanding and Distressing the Painted Bench in Everlasting…

Once the painted bench in Everlasting had been recovered, it looked a little too new for my Mom’s taste.

So, I simply distressed the spindles with 2202-grit sandpaper.

This part gets kind of messy though, so it’s best to do this step BEFORE you upholster.

That way you’re not using a small vacuum cleaner to get the dust off your fabric 😉

Despite fully understanding the vision for this piece before we ever hauled it out of the opportunity store, I still can’t believe the way this painted bench in Everlasting came together.

Here’s another peek at how the bench looked before…

and after…

Harrison Ford said, “We all have big changes in our lives that are more or less a second chance.”

And that sentiment is one I think about often, in life and in decorating and in treasure hunting too.

Sometimes change can be scary.

Especially, when the outcome is unknown.

But if decorating our homes can teach us anything about change, it’s that you have to try it to see if you will like it.

And if treasure hunting can teach us anything about change, it’s that letting go can be a good thing.

Because in the middle of it all it’s likely you, your home, and your treasures have all been given second chances.

And at the end of the day. those second chances are what made your life even more beautiful.
