If you had a chance to read our post, Simple Ways to Elevate Your Mornings, you know how much we appreciate a morning routine that is peace-filled and relaxing.

There’s just something about taking in the sweet scent of fresh air while journaling and sipping on a hot cup of coffee that starts the day off right.

While we primarily use the front porch, I’m excited about the plans we have to refresh the back patio. It’s been a long time coming!

No matter if your outdoor plans are big or small, now is a great time to start thinking about entertaining on the front porch, back patio, or lanai.

Here are a few weekend DIY projects for the porch or patio ideas….

Paint Your Front Door

Truth be told, our front door has not been painted since 2015 when we painted it with Modern Masters Front Door Paint.

The color is Elegant and the paint has held up extraordinarily well.

Give Your Porch or Patio a Fresh Coat of Paint

Several years ago we painted the back patio in Valspar’s Ember.

It felt like such a small change at the time.

But it made a big difference and helped to bring a more finished look to the patio.

Create An Inviting Outdoor Dining Area

This farmhouse table was one of my all-time favorite weekend projects for the porch or patio.

We built it with a mix of new and reclaimed boards and it lasted over 10 years!

Make an Outdoor Serving Station From a Workbench

The minute I saw these old workbenches I knew we could upcycle them into a potting station and a serving station.

They were easy to paint and made serving food and drinks on the back patio easy peasy!

Add Festive Outdoor Lighting

As you can see in the picture above, we used an old pocket door and added barn-style lights from Lowes to help give a little more lighting around the outdoor serving station.

We also have patio lights around the fire pit area which always makes it feel so cozy.

Especially, in the fall and winter seasons.

Hang a Porch Swing

It doesn’t matter if we’re at the cabin or on our back patio, I still say the porch swing is one of the best spots to relax and unwind.

In my honest opinion, if you have the budget for one, they’re well worth the investment.

Paint Your Patio Furniture

Before we had the wooden rockers that are currently on our front porch, we had wicker settees and chairs.

They added such a beautiful cottage charm to the space and held up better than I thought they would.

One year I decided to paint them black!

And despite being incredibly hard to clean thanks to all our pine and oak pollen, they added an instant elegance to our front porch.

Paint an Outdoor Dining Table

I painted this metal outdoor dining table with chalk paint to sell and it’s one of those pieces I wish I would have kept.

While it took longer to paint than I expected, it was a fun weekend project with a sweet cottage vibe.

Plant a Vegetable Garden

One of the weekend DIY projects for the porch or patio I’m most excited about this year is planting a vegetable garden.

While ours won’t be nearly this big, I loved the way the boxwoods in this community garden help act as a buffer for the vegetables.

Use a Baker’s Rack to Display and Grow Herbs

My Mom loves to use fresh herbs!

She used to have them in pots all over the lanai.

Well, one day she fell in love with this vintage baking rack and decided to make it an herb garden display.

Not only is it convenient for clipping herbs, but they’re also easier to water now too.

Plant a Succulent Garden in an Old Firepit

Several years ago, my aunt had an abundance of succulents.

So, she gave all her extras to us.

We were just about to trash our old firepit when we decided to use it as a base to plant a succulent garden.

It was another patio project that lasted a lot longer than we anticipated.

Plant a Container Garden in an Old Wheelbarrow

This rusty wheelbarrow has been on our back patio for almost 13 years! It’s so crusty I’m afraid the bottom is going to fall out at any moment.

But I love to look out at the back patio and see all the flowers blooming so I’m hoping to hold onto it as long as a I can.

Plant Container Gardens on the Front Porch

While life on this tiny little island is almost always pretty sweet, the sandy soil, salty marsh air, and coastal winds make it tough to have flower beds.

So, I’m careful to plant things on the front porch that will bloom throughout the entire season.

Several years ago we made this DIY Dutch Tulip Crate as a gift for my Mom and she loved it!

It’s one of those pieces you can use inside or out. Be sure to properly protect it from the elements if you choose to leave it outside though.

Adding Patina to Terracotta Pots with Chalk Paint

Another simple project that can be completed in an afternoon is adding patina to terracotta pots with chalk paint.

They’re another garden favorite that can easily be dressed up or down!
