Marrying a Farmhouse Hutch and Dresser

We’re sharing how to marry a farmhouse hutch and dresser today!

Over the past few years, we’ve really made a concerted effort to shop the house before buying anything new.

One reason is that this island cottage doesn’t have a lot of extra storage space. So, we’ve learned to be extra vigilant about what comes in and out.

Most of the pieces in our home have been painted multiple times.

They’ve also been moved from one room to the next to get a “fresh look” for free.

A few things have been moved to a new spot only to be moved right back a few months (or weeks) later.

But that’s how you learn, you know?

While it might seem like a hassle, shopping your house, moving furniture and accessories around, and investing in quality paint are some of the most budget-friendly ways to create a room you love.

After all, there’s a reason you brought home those amazing treasures in the first place!

Furniture Fruit Basket Turnover…

This notion was never more apparent than when we were working on the guest bedroom makeover.

For a few days, it seemed like furniture fruit basket turnover. I kept moving around SO many different pieces!

It might sound crazy, but I was ready for a change and open to any idea that would give us one for next to nothing.

As you can imagine, moving the French Country dresser to an adjacent wall in the guest bedroom left us with a big hole to fill.

So, I decided to marry the farmhouse hutch from my childhood desk suite and a dresser that belonged to my late Granny.

Both of which were being used in other parts of the house.

The minute I saw the pieces in the bedroom though, I knew immediately they would look so much better in the breakfast nook.

I’ll be honest, trying to sell the idea of putting a dresser in the breakfast nook was not as easy as I had imagined.

Thankfully, the art of compromise is still alive and well.

And in the end, it worked out for the best.

Marrying the Farmhouse Hutch and Dresser with Paint…

In order to truly marry the farmhouse hutch and dresser, I painted both pieces with Americana Décor Chalky Paint in Primitive.

I use this color a lot because it’s super neutral and goes with everything.

Our home is an open concept so you can stand in one spot and see into multiple rooms at once.

It’s taken us a while to get there. But having a united color palette has definitely helped to ensure a smooth transition from one space to the next.

If you’re new to painting, our post Back to Basics: Chalk Painting Furniture 101 will guide you through all the steps.

Once the paint was dry on the hutch and dresser, I used a fine art brush to paint all the details in Cottage White.

Then I lightly sanded both pieces with 220-grit sandpaper to distress them just a bit.

Even Subtle Changes Can Make an Impact…

Truthfully, the change is very, very subtle.

But marrying the farmhouse hutch and dresser really helped to soften the entire breakfast nook.

And I couldn’t be more excited to have my Granny’s dresser front and center.

Some of my most cherished memories include being gathered around her kitchen table spending time listening and learning from all her adventures.

Styling the Farmhouse Hutch and Dresser…

While I was busy with the breakfast nook curtains, my Mom was busy styling the farmhouse hutch.

I’ve had these pieces of brown and white transferware for years.

The pattern is called Royal Mail.

I still have a few things to pull together.

For example, deciding on which pillows will be the best fit (these seem a little too irresistible).

And I would love to update the coffee bar too

.

Overall, the breakfast nook is really close to being finished though.

It’s crazy how adding a pop of color and marrying the farmhouse hutch and dresser changed the feel of the entire space.
