How to Organize Christmas Ornaments

I hope your Christmas was totally amazing. We’re still enjoying some much needed time off but I know some of you are probably cleaning up from the holidays this week so I wanted to share a simple system I use for storing ornaments with you today. Don’t get me wrong I love how festive the house looks at Christmas. It’s absolutely worth every minute of decorating but lets face it – it can get really messy really quick when it’s time to clean it all up. I started using this system last year and I liked it so much I wanted to share it with you.

After losing multiple lids from the tubs we normally use, we switched to these clear plastic bins with the lids already attached. It’s been a total game changer. You can find them at most major retailers. These are from Lowes and cost less than $8 in my area. Organizing is high on everyone’s list so I’m hoping they’ll go on sale soon and we’ll be able to stock up on a few more. As I’ve shared before we don’t have a lot of storage space in the attic so this space saving option is really going to help because they’re also stackable.

Add a layer of plastic cups to the bottom of the bin. They’ll need to be cups that hold at least 16 oz liquid or more so make sure you read the label carefully.

Start adding ornaments to each cup. Larger ornaments may not fit in the cups but most of my boxed ornaments fit without any problems. If they’re breakable ornaments you’ll want to wrap them in tissue paper or bubble wrap to keep them protected. I almost always organize bin by color or theme. For example, put all your “Blue Christmas” ornaments together in one bin. They will probably all be blue or shades of blue. This will help cut down on the amount of boxes you’re having to bring down from the attic next year especially if you know in advance what colors you’ll want to use.

Sometimes if I have a little extra room left over and I have some soft ornaments that fit the same theme, I’ll tuck them on the side of the cups.

Once you have the bottom layer in place, cut a piece of poster or foam board and layer it on top of the plastic cups.

This is a great time to label your bin as well.

Repeat the same process for the top layer as you did for the bottom layer.

If you use ornament hooks, this is also a great time to place some in an envelope

and have them right ready for next year.

I have a specific number of bins I’m going to allow myself to keep this year. I’ve already gone through several boxes that are ready to donate. We haven’t used some of those items in a few years because my style has definitely changed. So now is a great time to go through your things before they are stored back in the attic or the basement for another year.

Here’s a quick guide if you want to pin this for the New Year. Almost everyone in my family leaves their tree up until after the New Year because they consider it bad luck. I’m a January 2nd kind of girl myself.

How to Organize Christmas Ornaments

I’m already thinking of my decorating theme for 2016 thanks to so many gorgeous home tours these past few weeks. See you guys back here tomorrow. I don’t even know how it’s possible but it’s already time to say Goodbye December, Hello January.

Many blessings,

CoCo

  1. Hey CoCo – doesn’t it feel like all of the ornaments and decorations just went up?! We definitely don’t need any bad luck so we will wait til the New Year to take it all down. Thanks for your fabulous organizing and storage tip!

    1. ha ha oh my word I know exactly what you mean, I don’t need any bad luck either. The reason we take it down on the 2nd is because the “elders” believe whatever you do on January 1 you’ll be doing all year so make sure you do only fun stuff 🙂 Hugs, CoCo
