Royal Inspired Cookie Cutter Ornament
Truth be told, this Royal Inspired Cookie Cutter Ornament, came to fruition after a total craft fail.
Several months ago (and long before the Harry and Meghan Netflix series came out and rocked my world), I found the cutest Queen Elizabeth II cookie cutter on Etsy.
The one I wanted most was made from stainless steel. But the delivery date didn’t work with our schedule.
So, I took a chance on another cookie cutter made from plastic and on a 3D printer.
My initial plan was to create a royal-inspired cookie cutter ornament from air-dry clay for my parent’s British-themed tree at Bliss Barracks.
After almost an hour of failed attempts though, I texted my Mom to tell her there was no way our original idea was going to work.
Maybe it was the design.
Maybe it was the material the cookie cutter was made of.
Perhaps it was the clay…
Nevertheless, we still wanted to find a way to use the cookie cutter. Especially, since we had already paid for it, and it seemed like a waste to throw it away.
So, we came up with the idea to use the cookie cutter as a stencil of sorts.
Here’s a look at how to create a royal-inspired cookie cutter ornament…
Royal Inspired Cookie Cutter Ornament Supplies:
- Royal Inspired Cookie Cutter
- Heavy Cardstock
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Single Hole Punch
- Glue
- Glue Application Brush
- Glitter
- Spray Adhesive
- Parchment Paper
- Cookie Sheet
- Spoon
- Cooling Rack, optional
- Ribbon, optional
Royal Inspired Cookie Cutter Ornament Steps:
Gather your supplies and make sure your work surface is clean and free from dust or debris.
Place your cookie cutter on top of your heavy cardstock paper.
Then outline the cookie cutter with a pencil.
Using caution and care as scissors will be sharp, cut around the shape of your cookie cutter.
Be sure to use a single-hole punch so you can hang this ornament on the tree or use it as a gift tag.
Add glue to your royal-inspired cookie cutter ornament with a brush.
Place the ornament on top of a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
Then sprinkle glitter on top of the ornament with a spoon until the ornament is completely covered.
Lightly shake any excess glitter off your royal-inspired cookie cutter ornament and reapply glitter if needed.
Lay your ornament on top of a cooling rack and allow it to dry completely.
Next, take your ornament outside to a well-ventilated area and spray it with spray adhesive as per the instructions on the back of the can.
Then place your royal-inspired cookie cutter ornaments back into the glitter bath.
Again, lightly shake the excess glitter off and allow it to dry completely on a cooling rack.
Once dry, thread a thin ribbon through the hole, hang, and enjoy!
Finding a Creative Way to Reframe a Total Craft Fail…
Even though these royal-inspired cookie cutter ornaments didn’t come out as we had originally planned, it was still fun to find a small way to incorporate Queen Elizabeth II onto the tree this year.
If you’re not into the royals, no worries. You can use this same idea to create something similar with just about any cookie cutter you like.
While this project was definitely a messy one, I think these ornaments add just the right amount of sparkle to the tree at Bliss Barracks.
And at the very least, they’ll be a sweet reminder of how you have to find a creative way to reframe failure sometimes.
Even during the holiday season.
Let us know what kind of ornaments you’re crafting this year. Until next time, I’ll see you on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

Thanks so much, Susan, I really appreciate it. It started out a doozie but I’m thankful we were able to save it. Big hugs and happy Christmas, CoCo
Your family’s British-inspired tree is so lovely! I think it’s wonderful that you made ornaments to commemorate the queen! Great job pivoting when the first plan failed! Here’s wishing you a very very Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
Aww thank you, Donna! It was a total failure at first but I’m thankful we were able to save them. They really do look pretty on their tree! My Mom hurt her back while decorating the tree just after Thanksgiving and she didn’t get to put up as much as she wanted because she was down for a few weeks. So she said she’s going to try the British theme again next year that way she can really enjoy it 🙂 Big hugs, CoCo
