Bedroom Decorating: Small Changes that Make a Big Impact
As I’ve shared with you guys this week, once we finished the office makeover I was ready to dive into giving the adjoining spaces a little refresh too. We were literally in my office with all three doors open, accessories in hand when my mom said, “We should move a few things around in the bedroom.” Never mind, we had been working non-stop on the office for almost 6 weeks ha ha.
So of course, right then and there, we left the office and headed into the bedroom to rearrange the furniture and plot out ideas. Oh my word, my house was so trashed at the end of the day. We had stuff everywhere! The bedroom and bathroom didn’t really need any major updates. We had painted both spaces and updated a few of the furniture pieces last year. But the style in the office no longer matched the style in the bedroom and bathroom. One of the easiest things you can do to create a cohesive look for your home is to have all of your spaces complementing each other.
I’ll be giving the bathroom a bit of an update in the weeks to come so for now, here are a few budget friendly changes you can make to help achieve a big impact when decorating your bedroom…
Give the Walls a Fresh Look with Paint – Last year, we gave the bedroom a neutrals inspired makeover including painting the bedroom walls in Valspar’s Quail Egg which we also repeated on three of the walls in the office. The creamy white color really helped to brighten the space. Here’s a look at the bedroom previously painted in a custom color similar to seaglass…
and in Quail Egg…
Rearrange Your Existing Furniture – During that makeover we also rearranged the furniture to help bring a bit more space to the flow of the bedroom. The layout has changed a few times over the years. Here’s a look at the room in 2013…
and just a few weeks ago. Switching the buffet turned nightstand, with the leather chair, and utilizing the ottoman as a bedside table helped the space to feel more open.
Change the Look of Your Existing Furniture – These dressers were the same dressers my mom used when she was growing up. I wanted to keep them neutrals based so I gave the dressers a wash that was more in line with the gray accents used in the bedroom. Painting or staining your existing furniture is a quick and budget friendly way to give a fresh look to existing pieces.
Create a Focal Point in the Room – We changed this old fireplace mantel into a headboard a few years ago and I still love it. It creates an interesting focal point and helps to set the tone for the entire room. I’ve seen old door, gates, shutters, pieces of art, fun stencils, planked walls…there are so many great ideas to creating a focal point so let your imagination run wild.
Shop Your House, Thrift Stores, Antique Malls, Estate Sales and Charity Shops for Accessories – If you love to collect things like I do, you probably already have a few accessories in your home you can swap out from one room to the next. Don’t be afraid to use interesting containers to hold favorited pieces like this ash bucket that holds a growing collection of brushes,
or these scales that were previously used in the dining room,
frames picked up over the course of several different shopping trips,
Layering different heights and textures will keep your items from looking one dimensional. Shopping thrift stores, antique malls, estate sales and charity shops will keep your wallet happy while still giving your spaces a new look.
Buy the Highest Quality Bedding You Can Afford – Isn’t it so nice when you stay in a really great hotel and the linens are so comfortable you want to read the paper over morning coffee and snuggle up for a cat nap in the afternoon? We spend at least 6-8 hours in bed each day so make the experience feel luxurious and buy yourself the highest quality bedding you can afford.
Layer Texture Throughout the Room – warm woods, interesting textiles, braided rugs, baskets, soft linens, fluffy duvets and nubby blankets will help to create a bedroom that feels relaxing.
Invest in Great Lighting – I know there’s a huge debate going on right now…ceiling fan for comfort or chandelier for beauty and function. Chose what best suits your lifestyle and adds to the overall appeal of your space.
Finally, Use Multiple Storage Options to Keep Your Bedroom Clutter Free – baskets, vintage suitcases and closed storage options like a nightstand with drawers or doors will help keep visual clutter at bay.
I hope these tips have helped. I know we all work really hard and at the end of the day creating a space that feels like a sanctuary is definitely something to look forward to.
I hope you guys all have a safe and happy weekend. We have a great week coming up next week so I’ll see you back here on Monday. Until then, I’ll see you on Facebook, Pinterest and on Instagram over the weekend.
Many blessings,
CoCo
Hey CoCo – Love your bedroom style and decor. We agree with each and every tip that you offer. We are big fans of shopping our own homes (or each others) to achieve a new look in a room. Cheers to a fun and relaxing weekend!
