Breakfast in Bed Picnic for Mother’s Day
Today, we’re sharing a simple breakfast in bed picnic for Mother’s Day idea!
Did you guys ever make your Mom breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day when you were little?
I was in the kitchen the other day making lunch when I had this flashback of waking up early on Mother’s Day with my sisters to make our Mom a special breakfast.
Our Breakfast in Bed Picnic Inspiration…
We were so little we weren’t allowed to use anything sharp or turn on the stove.
But on this particular Mother’s Day, we decided we would make my Mom a hearty breakfast of cereal and cinnamon toast with grape jelly.
We divided up all the jobs so everyone could take part. And while one person was slathering jelly on the toast, someone else was pouring milk into four bowls.
I was putting orange juice in a carafe because touching the coffee percolator was on the “no no” list.
We let my Mom sleep in until 7:30 am. Then proceeded to walk into her bedroom with our breakfast tray.
Given we were three prissy girls, we pulled out all the stops ?
We brought my Mom a fabulous breakfast in bed picnic complete with pretty napkins, vintage china, cards made with markers and gifts we had handmade at school that week.
I probably don’t have to tell you that by the time we actually made it to the bed, milk and juice had “tipped” out of the bowls. And jelly had dripped a sticky pathway from the door to the bed.
Of course, my Mom was gracious and acted like it was the best breakfast she had ever had.
She complimented us on what fine hostesses we were. And made special mention of how we had made her proud remembering to add pretty details like cloth napkins and flowered china.
We snuggled and giggled and ate like kings that morning completely forgetting what a massive mess we had left in the kitchen.
Graciousness Is an Art Form…
Looking back, my mom probably wanted to cry when she finally wandered into the kitchen. There was SO much to clean up.
If she was upset, she certainly did not show it.
Graciousness is such an art form, right?
Having a breakfast in bed picnic is fun anytime of the year but especially around birthdays and holidays like Mother’s Day.
It’s a simple way to make fun memories without making a big mess or having to clean one up.
Here are a few tips on how to create an easy breakfast in bed picnic for Mother’s Day or any morning you want to make feel special…
Keep the Menu Simple
Limit the menu to just a few simple items can be easily made and eaten without a lot of extra fuss.
Buy or Make Easy Breakfast Foods in Advance
Consider buying several breakfast foods in advance from your local bakery or specialty shop to help save time and cut down on having a messy kitchen.
Prep & Pack Your Picnic Basket Essentials the Night Before
Another time saving trick is to prep and pack as breafast in bed picnic basket essentials as you can the night before.
Depending on your menu, you likely won’t be able to pack any food in advance. That said, you can easily pack pretty plates, napkins, eating utensils and wrap gifts ahead of time.
Remember to Add a Blanket or Throw
While this is technically a simple breakfast in bed picnic for Mother’s Day idea, you can honestly create something similar and take it to the beach, the lake, park or even a field full of gorgeous flowers if you’re able.
Besides, even if you do decide to have this picnic bed, you don’t want to get crummies on your sheets ?
Don’t Forget the Pillows
You’ll definitely want to be propped up and comfortable while eating so you if you don’t have a lot of pillows on the bed bring some in for the picnic.
Music Is A Must
Whether you find the perfect spot indoors or out, music adds a fun ambiance to any event.
We have a home speaker system that we really enjoy. But if you don’t have one of those just cue up Pandora, Spotify or ask Alexa to play your favorite station.
Amos Lee Radio on Pandora and Mellow Folk on Amazon are two of our favorites because they both have a coffee house music vibe.

I think moms are full of grace and we never realize it until it’s to late. Such a sweet idea. Putting this fantastic post on my FB page today. Maybe my adult kids will take notice?! But having adult kids doesn’t negate the fact the kitchen will still be a huge mess. 😉
That is so true Cindy! After my Mom lost both of her parents so close together we’re all about saying and doing whatever we need to to make sure things are right. Whether it’s forgiving each other after a tiff or celebrating each other’s accomplishments, we realize the time is now. Thanks so much for the sweet share. I’m sure you girls will think of something totally fabulous for you. They definitely hit the love lotto with you as their Mom 🙂 Hugs, CoCo
I am in love with this!! It is so cute and the food looks amazing! I had to laugh thinking about the same thing…making breakfast for mom and making a big mess in the process hahah.
Karin
I really appreciate it, Karin, thank you so much! I’ve never seen someone that has as much patience as she does ha ha. It must been from all the years teaching first grade. Thankfully, she wasn’t too mad at us but oh my word there was a sticky mess to clean up from the bed all the way to the kitchen sink 🙂 Hope your week has been a happy one, CoCo
I love the memories you have of fixing your mom breakfast in bed. How sweet! Letting mom sleep in and then serving her breakfast in bed is such a thoughtful idea for Mother’s Day.
Thank you, Michelle! Looking back I don’t know how she kept her cool because the kitchen was such a mess and the floors were super sticky but I’m thankful she took it all in stride. Mom’s are definitely heroes 🙂 Hugs, CoCo
Love this idea CoCo. We have the tradition of breakfast in bed for birthdays but I would love to start this one too. Beautiful photography and styling!
Thank you so much, Michelle! We’ve been looking for lots of different ways to celebrate the big thing and the little things too. I keep reminding my family that while we’re limited on the amount of meat, canned goods, and eggs we’re still able to purchase plenty of sweet treats from the bakery. Thankfully, with no limit yet 🙂 Sending you hugs and blessings for a fabulous Mother’s Day weekend! Hugs, CoCo
This is the cutest idea! I love all of your fun childhood memories, making breakfast for your mom! I am so in love with your blog CoCo! So much inspiration here!
You are so sweet, Kim, thank you! I appreciate that so much. We still talk about how chill my Mom was when we made breakfast and dripped all kinds of sticky stuff from the kitchen to her bedroom. I only hope to be that chill one day ha ha. Sending you lots of hugs for a happy week and fun weekend! May you feel truly celebrated, CoCo
This is such a sweet and beautiful idea! I loved reading your memories of doing it for your mom! My kids love to do this for me on birthdays and Mother’s Day and I think my favorite part is listening to them while I pretend to still sleep and they think they are being quiet in the kitchen! Thanks for sharing the goodness at Charming Homes & Gardens!
ha ha I NEVER thought of that Kristin! We thought we were being “generous” by letting her sleep until 730 but we were so loud she was probably up as soon as we started pulling things out of the cabinets. We still talk about how chill she was through it all and I’m sure your kids will one day too. They’re lucky to have you! Hugs and blessings on your Mother’s Day weekend, CoCo
What a stunning picnic spread! You had me at “breakfast in bed” and then you outdid yourself by turning it into a picnic! So, so lovely. While I can vaguely remember making breakfast in bed for my mom, even more so – I remember my husband and our foster son bringing me breakfast in bed when I was sick. It was the sweetest thing! Also, thank you for the playlist recommendations. Can’t wait to give them a listen! I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
Thank you, Candace! It’s so sweet the people in your house take care of you that way. I swear easy meals in bed makes recovering from any kind of sickness or celebrating special occasions so much better. I hope your Mother’s Day was a blessed one. Several members of my family have fostered then adopted kids and we could not imagine our family without them! Hope your week is a happy one, CoCo
