A Simple Office Space for the Bedroom
We’re sharing how to create a simple office space for the bedroom today!
Over the past few years, we’ve been very intentional about placing a desk in most of the bedroom spaces I’ve had the privilege to work on.
Especially, in bedrooms I know will be used often.
A desk is one of those pieces of furniture that is so utilitarian it can easily perform double duty as a home office, study station, an area for morning quiet time, a place to be creative, or even a nightstand.
In fact, if you’ve ever been a guest at home that doesn’t have a designated desk or area to set up a laptop or charging station for phones and tablets you’ve likely noticed it almost immediately.
After all, there’s a reason most hotel rooms have a small table or separate area set up for conveniences like these.
Creating a Simple Office Space for the Bedroom
Don’t be afraid to shop your house first when creating a simple office space.
We’ve used this slim desk in the primary bedroom as well as one of the guestrooms as our needs have changed over the years.
It almost seems weird to say that because we technically have 2 home offices.
But the convenience of waking up in the middle of the night with an idea to research or trying to find a peaceful study alternative makes creating a simple home office space for the bedroom very appealing.
Thankfully, “shopping the house” makes for a budget-friendly option and a quick solution too.
Working From Home and Hybrid Work Hours…
I know a lot of us have had to completely overhaul how we work.
Especially, if you’re in a situation where you primarily work from home or live with someone who has a hybrid work situation.
We’re in that boat too!
Whatever the reason, there are plenty of easy ways to design a utilitarian space that fits your needs.
I’m so thankful to be able to work in The Crowned Goat Cottage from Fall to Spring.
The quiet space definitely feels like a respite from all the conference calls!
Here’s a look at 7 things to consider as you’re creating a simple home office space for the bedroom…
Choose the Right Size Desk
The size desk you choose will largely depend on how much space you have in your bedroom. Think about how you plan to use the desk in advance.
If you plan to use a laptop and a few accessories you might be able to get away with using a slim desk or a console table.
However, if the desk in your bedroom will also act as your primary workstation, you might need to consider space for a large monitor and other related computer equipment.
Make Sure You Have a Comfortable Chair
Admittedly finding a desk chair that is comfortable, ergonomic, and pretty is not always easy.
I found this slip-covered chair from IKEA a few years ago.
While it works fine for the length of time we use it, we’re still on the hunt for something that will be both supportive and comfortable.
Keep a Consistent Color Palette
I could sing the praises of keeping a consistent color palette in your home all day long!
It’s especially important if you’re creating a simple home office space for your bedroom though.
Choosing a color palette that complements the rest of your room’s furnishings will help to create a cohesive feel thereby limiting distractions and making room for better productivity.
Consider Your Storage and Organizational Needs
Most desks come with at least one or two drawers.
So, consider how you will use them before you set up a simple home office space in your bedroom.
Your storage and organizational needs will likely depend on extra computer equipment or accessories you use throughout the day.
We’ve organized this desk with a bamboo drawer divider.
But you could also use acrylic dividers, vintage storage options, or organizers from the dollar store.
The main point is to make sure everything you need has a home because you’ll be more likely to keep your desk and desk drawer tidy that way!
Select the Right Headphones or Ear Buds…
As I shared above having multiple people work from home takes a lot of care and consideration.
Even when everyone has a designated desk area.
Given I create content nearly every day, it’s important to have focused quiet time to write.
So, I usually listen to Classical Music for Brain Power.
Sometimes the constant voices from conference calls wafting through the house are so distracting, I can’t concentrate though.
And when that happens, I’ll grab my headphones or noise-canceling earbuds to help drown out the noise.
Choose the Right Outlet
Choosing the right outlet seems like it should be super simple.
But honestly, there are tons of outlet and switch options available now. Including, smart switches and outlets you can control with your phone.
We were looking for a simple way to cut down on all the cords associated with our equipment. So, we chose outlets that multitask as surge protection, USB outlets, and electrical outlets too.
Using Natural Light or Lamps
Deciding on how to light your desk area will be a matter of preference.
Especially, given what time of day you’ll be using the space.
This bedroom already has 2 large windows, sconces over the headboard, and overhead lighting as well.
During the day there is plenty of light, but at night we’ll need a light that can easily transition from bright to dim as needed.
As you’re putting together all the pieces needed to create a simple home office space for the bedroom, think about whether you’ll be more inclined to use natural light or lamps.
That way you’ll know how much room you’ll need on your desk and how much to build into your decorating budget.
I hope these 7 things to consider as you’re creating a simple home office space for the bedroom have helped. Let us know what kind of desk or workstation you’ve been using while working from home!

Oh how I LOVE the Secretary Makeover in Cartouche Green! I am forever on a search for a piece like this.
Thank you, Patty! Can you believe my aunt had that piece in her stash? My Mom is so excited to have it now. Especially, with a fresh coat of paint. Hope your day has been a fun one, CoCo
Hey, girlfriend… do you have a link for the outlet combo you picture? I just found out I will continue working from home two days a week, so a ‘permanent’ office will need to be created in my little space (no more craft table in front of my TV/computer monitor!) Pinned!
I just sent you an email with a few options, Julie! That way, you can choose a plug that best fits your office set up and outlet situation. Let me know if you have any questions. Working from home does take a little bit of an adjustment at first but we actually love it now 🙂 Hugs, CoCo
The timing for this is perfect! We made one of our bedrooms into a full office a while ago, and now we are planning to convert it back to a bedroom with a small work area. These are great tips to help with that!
You have created such a beautiful office space that feels cozy and not office-y (is that a word?) I will be working on mine soon I love your ideas! Hugs, Tanya
I am in love with your secretary CoCo! The color, the way you have it styled, all perfection in my book. You always have such wonderful ideas and tips. When I was working from home, I was thankful we had a desk I was able to spread out on and be able to set up all of my screens. Thank you for sharing your inspiration and ideas with us!
Thanks for so many great tips! We recently redid a desk for our guest room and I need to add an outlet like yours. Having a place for guests to easily plug in and recharge is a must these days! I love how all of your desks are so beautiful but functional at the same time! Thanks again!
