Budget Friendly Shed Makeover Reveal
As I type this, I’m sipping a peppermint mocha next to our tree that has nothing on it save for the glow of tiny white lights.
I can hardly believe this season of the One Room Challenge is coming to an end.
Without a doubt, it’s been one for the books.

Budget-Friendly Shed Makeover
Just a few days ago we were leaving the parking lot of Lowes when a fellow customer flagged us down to assist her with a man, she feared was having a stroke.
As we got closer, we could clearly see he was unresponsive and slumped over in the driver’s seat of his SUV.
My bestie S immediately called 911. While I helped the good Samaritan bring him round and briefed the manager of Lowes on the man’s condition.
Thankfully, the ambulance arrived within minutes and the EMTs took over.
As you can imagine though, it completely shook us up.
On the way home, we talked about how the One Room Challenge is so aptly named.
I honestly don’t know a single person that has ever competed in this Challenge that hasn’t encountered a “test of wills” event.
Believe me, we know these events all too well.
There was the Spring One Room Challenge my Dad had a mild heart attack working on the bedroom makeover.
And the year my bestie S had an accident so severe she temporarily lost the use of both legs for months during the One Room Challenge we made over the kitchen and pantry.
So, it seemed completely apropos as we were putting the finishing touches on Phase One of the budget-friendly shed makeover, we got the news Hurricane Eta was heading toward Florida.
With heavy rains predicted to hit our coastal community within hours, I grabbed the Christmas bins by the door, a few pieces of ironstone from the bookshelves, and raced to take pictures before the storm set in.
Painted Hutch and DIY Console Table
I started by layering the painted hutch we refreshed in Week 3 with greenery and ironstone collected from treasure hunts with my Mom.
It’s hard to believe this is the same piece that had previously been holding paint cans in our garage the past few years.
I’m so thankful it worked out though because we blew our budget really early on.
I wanted to put a skirt on the DIY console table base we completed in Week 4.
But with the storm coming, the baskets were the quickest option and I wound up loving the extra layer of texture.
DIY Office Work Island
Once the hutch and base were in place, I decided to turn my attention to dressing up the DIY office work island. It takes up one entire side of the shed.
I love that its counter height, has room for extra seating, and can be used to hold office supplies.
It’s also great for spreading out paint and fabric samples and design books too.
My Mom and I found this scale for $5 one year at Renningers.
It was a beast to haul out to the shed. Every time I see it, I think of our many treasure hunting trips.
The painting was a sweet gift from my friend Liz after the passing of our beloved Talladega and one of my most cherished possessions.
I use a paper calendar every day. Yet I love having a large chalkboard to help stay on track.
Using an Entry Table As a Desk
When we were in the early planning stages of this budget-friendly shed makeover, I knew my desk had to be sturdy enough to use every day.
Yet also light and easy to move for photoshoots and studio days.
This slim table was actually made for an entry. But the size wound up to be perfect to use in the shed as a desk.
I chose an outdoor rug because I wanted something with texture that would be simple to clean. It’s a good thing too because, in week 4, I spilled a glass of grape Kool-Aid on it.
DIY Budget Friendly Workstation
One of my favorite pieces in the shed makeover was the budget-friendly workstation we created in Week 4.
The marble inspired laminate countertop is simple to use and easy to clean.
The legs made from deck posts we cut down to counter height was a fun last-minute find. And it totally saved our budget too.
The chippy door was another piece we picked up at Renningers. It’s a great backdrop to use in any season, especially for the holidays.
I found the deer while we were at the cabin a few years ago. We use it all around the house during Christmas.
The Thing That Tripped Us Up The Most…
There were several projects we completed for this budget-friendly shed makeover that gave us pause. But I can honestly say nothing tripped us up like the chandeliers.
The scale of the first set we ordered was too small. The second set arrived much later than expected and the single page “instruction manual” barely had a word on it.
My sweet Dad talked us through everything via Zoom which was a huge blessing.
While I originally had no plans to dress this budget-friendly shed makeover, in Christmas style, I’m thankful for the layers of greenery and sparkly ornaments.
The Crowned Goat Cottage has been a long time coming. It feels like the perfect way to kick off the holiday season and celebrate.
I’ve walked into this office space a thousand times. Yet it still feels surreal to be able to call it my own.
From the Bottom of my Heart…
To our TCG friends – Thank you for your love, support, kindness, and encouragement throughout this event. There were a few days I was completely ready to give up and your reassurance kept me in the game.
Thank you to my Mom who helped me space plan and move in all the furniture.
And finally, to my bestie S without whom none of this would have even been possible – thank you for the late nights, the early mornings, the countless weekends, the Hitchcock episode I wouldn’t have been able to face without you, the rides to get custard, the tissues for my tears, your troubleshooting skills, problem-solving genius, and steady hand.
Every inch of this space is filled with your best gifts and abundant blessings neither of which I take for granted.

I think your Cottage Shed is absolutely Gorgeous! I know you will enjoy it for a long time. I pray that you will not have to suffer with any hurricane/tornado damage. I’ve been through that with my condo at PCB. No fun at all. My hubby finally decided he was done with it and sold it earlier this year. Makes me so sad but I understood. It is wonderful that you have such a good friend to help you and run around with too. It’s always more fun with two! Now enjoy the spoils of your work.

Oh, good job!!! It’s both pretty and functional….. I’d give a lot to have a shed like this… wish I could talk Mr B into it, but after 20 years of incessant whining without a yes, I guess I have to call defeat…. But glad you didn’t let the ORC defeat you. And now as Eta has her way with us, batten down the hatches!
I’m not even gonna lie, Crystal, there were a few times I was completely ready to give up. This project was so much harder than I ever expected. I’m thankful we stuck with it though and I’m thankful we were able to finish it before the holidays too. I love every single thing that you (and all your sweet helpers) have accomplished – I can only imagine how exhausted you and S were – but I hope you will continue to feel it was worth it! The painting of Talladega brought tears – I hurt with you when she passed away. The goat (painting or print?) made me smile – so cute! And that deer has always been my favorite of your Christmas decor – I would probably leave him out all winter! I always keep my eyes open hoping to find one similar!
