Painted Table, Chairs, and a Shed Update
It’s Week 2 of the One Room Challenge and today we’re sharing a painted table, chairs, and a shed update!
As always, a big thank you to the One Room Challenge
and media partner Better Homes and Gardens for hosting this bi-annual inspirational event.
We’ve made a lot of progress this week. We installed and painted the baseboard trim in Valspar’s Du Jour,
finished painting the walls also in Du Jour, the floor in New Concrete,
and the rafters in Faint Maple.
The rafters took a while because I had to paint each side individually then sand each beam front and back.
My arms were definitely hurting but I love how they have rustic look to them now.
After so many delays and months of rain, it feels really good to able to walk around in the shed aka The Crowned Goat Cottage without bumping into projects or paint cans.
With the shell of the building complete, I’ve been turning my attention to furniture and furniture placement.
Given we blew the majority of our budget early on in the building process, I’m going to have to shop the house and grab pieces of furniture from our garage stash.
We’ve had this table in the garage for so long, I don’t even know how long we’ve had it or where it even came from.
While I wouldn’t say it’s in great shape, it’s in decent enough shape to be able to use it as a desk or a craft table.
Since I’m keeping the color scheme neutral, I decided to paint the table with Americana Décor Chalky Paint in Primitive which is one of my favorite greige colors.
We’ve used it in several places inside the house too.
To prep the table for painting, I used a medium bristle brush to remove any dirt, debris, or cobwebs. Then I carefully wiped everything down with warm water and mild dish detergent.
After that, I primed the entire piece and used three coats of Primitive on the top and two coats of Primitive on the bottom.
This photo is a little deceiving because it was super overcast when I took this picture. The table and paint color look whiter than the gray-brown color it’s supposed to be.
Once I brought the painted table into the shed though, you can definitely see the brown undertones.
It’s also a little smaller than I thought it would be too.
For some reason, I thought we would be able to fit 4 chairs around the table but at best, we’ll only be able to fit two.
I snagged these chairs from the dining room to see how they fit…
and this option from the breakfast nook.
Truthfully, I think I need to get the rest of the furniture in place first before I decide if I’m going to use this table and which chairs will make the cut.
Right now, I’m on the fence because the size isn’t what I expected.
I know it looks like there is plenty of room but the work station is supposed to go here because it’s over 7 feet long. This is basically one of two walls the work station can go on unless we float it in the middle.
Also, I don’t know if I’m going to keep the painted table this color either.
Here’s the rug I was thinking of using from our stash. I’m just worried it might blend in too much.
What do you think?

Many blessings,

I like the rug. The shed looks amazing.
Thank you Sabrena! It’s been a ton of work but I finally feel like things are coming together now. Hugs, CoCo PS: I might keep the rug and ditch the desk 🙂
CoCo, Everything looks amazing and I know how hard you have worked. I think the table color is fine, unless you want to paint it a color. I don’t know what your theme is yet, so you can always paint it later. he only comment I have is that I think 4 chairs would make it look crowded. But I again I don’t know what the end plan is. I just know that it looks amazing!
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words, Mary! I’m totally with you on the 4 chairs, it would definitely be too crowded. I think I’ll move the biggest piece of furiture in there over the weekend and then decide on the table. Thank you for reminding me I don’t have to have it all figured out at once 🙂 Hope you have the best day, CoCo
Well, you have a great start. Almost looks like you should try and find a drop-leaf table. Since ‘early american’ looking furniture isn’t particularly popular with the young folks, you should be able to find one pretty cheap. Here in Chicagoland, they show up on Craig’s List for $20 or less. Such a great little space though. I’m sure it will morph beautifully. Sandi
That is such a great idea, Sandi, thank you! The ease of being able to fold the leaves up and down as needed would be super helpful. It looks like there is so much room in there when it’s all empty but the minute you start bringing in the furniture you realize it’s basically the size of a big bedroom 🙂 I’m gonna have to rethink my priorities for sure he he! Sending you hugs and thank yous for your advice, CoCo
First off, it has come so far and love the rafters.
The rug is a great color too if you’re keeping things neutral.
What if for your work station you used a 3/4 inch think plywood?
You could use the chairs.
Cindy
That is a great idea, Cindy! I love how adding the plywood to the top would allow it to accommodate more chairs and also provide more surface area too. I’m going to try and finish the piece that is supposed to be behind the painted table and see how much room there is. I might have to nix the seating area altogether. Big hugs, CoCo
Those colors make the perfect clean slate. I like the rug too.
Thanks so much, Stacy! I’m trying to keep everything as neutral as possible so I can decorate it throughout the year. Fingers crossed I can pull it off and bring all the elements together in the next few weeks. Hugs, CoCo
I need a she shed! That rug is going to add great texture!
Thank you, Tracy! I was totally ok with making this space a garden shed but once the pandemic hit I knew I had to find an office with a lot fewer distractions. Hopefully, this will do the trick 🙂 Hope your day has been a fun one, CoCo
It’s really coming along and you should be super proud of yourself! And how awesome is it that you had a table stashed in the garage? I throw away just about everything that isn’t nailed down! Enjoy
Thank you, Cindy! That table was supposed to be used as an extra work surface in the garage because we don’t have any work tables or workstations but it honestly became the place we just piled things up which totally drove me crazy. I’m not 100% sold on it just yet but I’m hoping to move some things around this weekend so see if it will stay or go. Big hugs, CoCo
Oh my goodness, CoCo! I just love how the shed is shaping up! Those beams are amazing and I just love that you chose neutral colors so you can add pops of it here and there! As for the table, you have an amazing talent and eye for design, so I know you’ll figure it out. I love the color you painted it, so if it doesn’t work in the shed I’d definitely find somewhere to showcase it!
Thank you so much for your sweet words of encouragement, Christine, I really appreciate it! I know you completely understand this process since you just transformed your gorgeous bathroom. I’m hoping to keep things as neutral as possible to make it easier to decorate throughout the year. With only a few more weeks to go though I’m starting to get nervous and excited about all the details. Big hugs, CoCo
The ORC is so fun! I agree the color isn’t quite right. When we finished our barn loft, I struggled with the color of our barn doors. We had four on each wall. I wanted a neutral space. I ended up going with a color called americauna egg from Magnolia paints. It turned out to be the perfect color. It reads neutral but is a bit of a blue-green. Whatever you choose, I am sure it will be amazing! Thank you for sharing with us as always!
Thanks so much for giving your opinion, Jenn, I really appreciate it! After thinking about it over the weekend, I don’t think the color is right and the table is probably too big as well. It’s hard because there’s not a lot of light out there and it’s been raining a lot so trying to find the right tone has been totally bananas. My Mom will be here on Thursday and I couldn’t be more thankful for the extra help and advice. There’s still so much to do! Hugs, CoCo
