Glass Glitter Snowflake Ornaments

Today, we’re sharing our DIY glass glitter snowflake ornaments! 

I’m usually one of those people that have a Christmas plan well in advance. 

I flip through magazines and search Pinterest for months looking for just the right theme, crafting things here and there along the way.

My goal every year is to execute the plan, in a weekend or two. That way, I can be on my merry way picking up gifts and soaking up all things Christmas cheer.

The season is such a short one, and I don’t want to waste a minute.

But this year, I’ve really struggled to stick with a game plan. 

I think it’s because we worked on The Crowned Goat Cottage for SO long, by the time the season was upon us, I just decided to forgo all the fuss and create a feeling instead.

Adding Some Sparkle to the Game Plan…

For a few weeks now, our home has been draped in lots of greenery and there are tiny white lights all over our tree. 

The décor is really simple and brings me so much happiness.

But something about it felt off.

I just couldn’t put my finger on it though.

When I talked to my bestie S about it all, she was sure, it was because there was very little sparkle.

And as I looked around, I realized she was probably right because there was almost none.

Determined to shake off the “maybe next year,” mentality, I revisited the original game plan and decided there had to be a way to incorporate a bit of sparkle without spending lots of extra time crafting.

As I was going through my craft stash, I realized I had one pound of glass glitter I had never even opened much less used, because I was waiting for a “special occasion.”

I know.

Like if there were ever a year to break out the glass glitter, it’s this one. CoCo.

Thankfully, I found a mix of thrift store snowflakes and bought a few extra from the dollar store. Then I set about adding some sparkle to our holiday home with glass glitter.

They were super easy to create and while our décor is still really simple, I love the way the glass glitter snowflakes sparkle.

Here’s a look at everything you need to know to create these DIY Glass Glitter Snowflake Ornaments…

DIY Glass Glitter Snowflake Supplies:

• Glass Glitter 
• Plastic Snowflakes
• High Tack Spray Adhesive (you can also use Elmer’s Glue)
• Kraft Paper
• Cardboard Shoe Box
• Spoon
• Ribbon, optional
• Tarp (to protect your work surface)
• Spray Tent, optional
• Drying Rack

DIY Glass Glitter Snowflake Steps:

Gather your supplies and lay a tarp or kraft paper down to protect your work surface. 

Decide in advance, how you want to coat each glass glitter snowflake.

I carefully emptied the glass glitter into a cardboard shoebox so it would be easier to manage the coating process.

Make sure you read the directions on the back of your spray adhesive, use caution, and care and perform the next step in a well-ventilated area.

Coat the front and back of your snowflake with high tack spray adhesive.  Keep in mind, adhesives like this will have overspray so make sure your work area is protected.

Next, using caution and care, place the snowflake directly into the glass glitter box.

Spoon glass glitter over the entire snowflake, making sure it is completely covered.

Allow the snowflake to sit in the glass glitter for several seconds or up to several minutes. The back of your adhesive can will be able to provide the most accurate information.  

Drying Glass Glitter Ornaments:

Again, using caution and care, use the spoon to lift the DIY glass glitter snowflake out of the box.

Lightly shake the snowflake to make sure any loose glitter glass falls directly back into the box.

Then, allow the rest snowflake to rest on a piece of kraft paper, before hanging the DIY glass glitter snowflake ornament on a drying rack.

Keep in mind, you need to lightly coat the glass glitter ornaments again with spray adhesive and repeat the process depending on how much coverage you were able to get the first time.

I “sealed” these ornaments with another very light coat of adhesive which gave them a matte look and allowed them to dry overnight.

The plastic snowflake ornaments came with a clear fishing line style hook, but I’ll probably replace it with a pretty ribbon.

Keep in Mind…

Glass glitter is made of crushed glass.

So, it’s not a good idea to allow the littles to help with this project. You’ll want to take extra precautions for family pets as well. 

While it is probably unlikely glass glitter will cut you, you should still take caution and care when using it.

Also, as with regular glitter make sure to not spill it all over the floor and don’t run your hands through it.  

I’ll definitely be making more of these and I can’t wait to see our entire tree covered in snowflake ornaments.
