ORC Week 1: Pantry and Kitchen Makeover Plans

Today, we’re excited to share our pantry and kitchen makeover plans for Week One of the One Room Challenge.

Over the summer we painted the kitchen…which lead to painting and giving the breakfast nook a makeover…which led to painting the living room…which led to painting the hallway and ultimately the entry, all in Valspar’s Bistro White.

You guys know how it goes ?

It was always my plan to immediately start working on the pantry and the kitchen makeover after finishing the breakfast nook but once we realized we had plenty of materials to makeover the entry, we decided to go ahead and knock it out first. If you’ve been following along on our progress via the blog or on Instagram you may already know I got a teensy bit stuck on the artwork and the side tables for the entry.

Nevertheless, we’ve decided to move forward on our plans to give the kitchen a makeover. We’ve also decided to give the pantry a bit of a makeover as well, thanks to a partnership with Stencil Revolution.

The thing is, neither one of these spaces are really that bad. But there are things about both the pantry and the kitchen we’d like to change. And I’ll be honest, the real-time 6 weeks challenge of the One Room Challenge always keeps us on track and is a fabulous motivator.

While our walk-in pantry is relatively small, it’s been one of the most functional spaces in our home. We have a dish pantry on one side and we keep our dry goods and other pantry related stuff on the other side.

Over the past few months, however, we’ve had to start feeding my little Jelly Bean in the pantry because she is going blind. And it’s been during those feeding sessions, I’ve realized we could not only make the pantry more functional, we could also make it prettier too.

Here’s a look at our plans for the pantry…

Pantry Makeover To-Do List:

• Paint the pantry walls in Valspar’s Bistro White
• Stencil with walls using the French Bee Trellis Stencil in Valspar’s Cathedral Stone
• Add trim and pediment to the window
• Repair and repurpose French Linen painted dresser as the new pet feeding station
• Add baskets to make pet feeding station more organized
• Reorganize & declutter party drawers
• Reorganize & declutter dish pantry
• Add baskets to help keep dishes and teacups more organized
• Replace chalkboard tags with luggage tags holding dry goods
• Add new rug
• Add new light
• Add French style laundry basket to hold shopping bags

I think the pantry is going to be fairly straight forward and I’m super excited to get started on the transformation.

Ok, now let’s talk about the kitchen makeover. About two years ago, we painted the kitchen cabinets white and we loved them. But over the past year, they’ve really started to yellow. It’s very noticeable and desperately needs to be fixed.

In addition, we’ve decided to add a planked wall to create a bit of texture in the kitchen and to break up all the white. Right now, it feels really flat because everything is either black or white which brings me to the hardware. We still love the c-cup pulls but the black hardware next to the black granite countertops just don’t work anymore. Right now, I’m thinking a tarnished antique gold, but we’ll see how it all goes.

Kitchen Makeover To-Do List:

• Install planked wall
• Paint planked wall in Valspar’s Bistro White
• Repaint kitchen cabinets
• Add X’s to the kitchen island
• Update kitchen hardware
• Update island pendent lights
• Replace kitchen desk chair
• Restyle and accessorize kitchen desk
• Add greenery
• Hang ironstone or brown and white transferware plate wall
• Keep “Where Trouble Melts Like Lemon Drops,” sign
• Keep upholstered bar chairs
• Add new rug
• Add new artwork

I think the most time-consuming part of the kitchen is going to be adding the planked wall and painting the kitchen cabinets. Everything else feels pretty doable!

I know this is an incredibly long list of things to do and it feels completely lofty to think we might actually be able to get it all done in 6 weeks given we’re doing this in real time. That said, this is our 4^th One Room Challenge and during that time, I’ve seen our office transformed, one of the bedrooms updated and a crazy cool laundry room makeover too.

They all felt big and scary and overwhelming at the time, but they’re some of our favorite projects and memories. We’re excited to get started! Until next time, I’ll see you on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.
