ORC: Guest Bedroom Makeover Plans

We’re sharing our One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover plans today!

As always, a special shout out and thank you to the One Room Challenge and Better Homes and Gardens for hosting this inspirational event.

If you’re not familiar with the ORC, it’s a bi-annual event where guest participants and featured designers work to makeover their spaces from top to bottom.

This year, due to significant shipment delays because of the pandemic, we’ll have 8 weeks to complete our makeovers which is really exciting.

It definitely helps to take the pressure off a bit because the One Room Challenge is no joke.

Guest Bedroom Makeover Plans: Before

This is our 7^th time participating and even though we’re usually exhausted by the end of the challenge, we’re always thankful to have learned new skills and have a space we love.

The One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover we’ll be working on has gone through so many phases over the years. As you can see, I went through a major shabby chic-inspired phase.

Then I fell in love with neutrals, and we gave the space a refresh. My camera got an upgrade too ?

A few years later, we decided to turn the guest bedroom into my office. And while I appreciated having a designated space to work in, the room just never felt quite right.

So, it stayed like this for almost 2 years.

Since we created The Crowned Goat Cottage by turning our outdoor shed into my office for the One Room Challenge last fall, we’re excited to finally be turning the office back into a proper guest bedroom.

If we have time, we might try to refresh the adjoining bathroom as well. While I don’t have a vision for the bathroom just yet, I feel like I have a solid vision for the One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover.

Here’s a look at all the details…

One Room Challenge Guest Bedroom Makeover Plans: Design Board & Paint

My plan is to accent the walls with either Benjamin Moore’s First Light, Behr’s Cameo Stone, or Pink Prism. 

Adding pink walls to this guest bedroom makeover is going to be kind of tricky because there is only one window in the entire room, and it’s a small one.

Furniture Plans:

In addition, there are 3 doors to work around, 2 of which are on the same wall, so furniture placement is going very interesting.

I’m going to try and shop the house for furniture pieces we might be able to use before buying anything new.  This dresser is definitely staying

but I would love to have a seating area with a library like this one I recently spotted at an antique store. I’ll also be on the hunt for a new desk.

Antique Iron Bed and Linen Options:

The bed we’ll be using is an antique iron bed we’ve had stashed in one of the closets for years.  I’ll definitely be repainting it though, because it’s really starting to chip.  

Right now, I’m on the fence trying to decide between a bronze, a rust and an antique gold.

We’re also planning to use a bed crown for this One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover too.

This metal one is really pretty and I’m thinking about pairing it with nubby oatmeal-colored curtains.  I think it will be a nice mix with the pale pink.

As far as the linens go, I’ll be using basic lace trimmed white sheets, a floral duvet set from IKEA and a pale blush colored quilt set I’m hoping to be able to match with the paint color.

Lighting:

Speaking of which, the paint and bed frame color will determine if we’ll be changing out the current chandelier or not.

It’s in good shape so we don’t really need a new one but I would love to have more light for the One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover, so we’ll see how it goes.

Rugs, Art and Accessories:

When comes to rugs, art, accessories and accents we’ll be keeping it pretty simple. 

I have an ever-growing collection of horse trophies I’d love to find a place for, the rug we’re currently using is still in great shape, and while I have plenty of wall art to choose from, I may try to find a spot for Princess Margaret given her sister featured in an adjoining room.

All in all, I’m excited to see how things come together. I’ve truly been struggling with this space for almost 4 years now so even having an idea for the One Room Challenge guest bedroom makeover plans feels like a big win.
