Boho Chic Inspired Media Cabinet Makeover
As I shared yesterday, we’ve started working on the home office makeover at our home Journey’s End. I’ve been wanting to tackle that space for years now so I couldn’t be more excited about starting the project. At the same time that is all happening, I’m also going to be working out of town on a few projects for Hawk’s Ridge, my baby sisters house. One of those projects is a living room refresh. We’ve been searching for a new media cabinet to help streamline the look of the current TV and bookcase set up but until now we haven’t found anything we loved.
Well, all of that changed when we started working on the office makeover because I realized the console cabinet we had in the office was too big for our space but would be perfect in her living room. The problem was it was not her style at all. Not even close…
My baby sister has a style that is completely different than my own. She’s definitely a boho chic meets Scandinavian style meets industrial-vintage vibe. I’m excited to collaborate with her on all of these projects because it’s going to be so much fun helping to make her house a home one piece, one room, one step at a time. The first order of business was to make this cottage inspired office console cabinet into the boho chic media cabinet of her dreams. Here’s a look at how we created a boho chic inspired console makeover in a few simple steps…
The interior of Hawk’s Ridge is painted in Benjamin Moore Gray Owl and the color is so relaxing. All of the trim is painted in a crisp white and the floors are walnut. They wanted lots of texture and in addition to the colors mentioned above they also chose varying shades of blue for all of the room except for the kids rooms. Given they have an open floor plan and you will be able to see the media cabinet and living room as you walk through the front door of the house, we chose a gorgeous dark gray/navy color for the body. It’s Hematite by Valspar.
This was the first time in a long time I’ve really painted a piece of furniture with a dark color. Most of the time I stick to soft grays, whites, creams and sea glass hues so after the first coat of diy chalk inspired paint, I was thinking, “Oh my word! Streaks!”
Then I had to sand down the top because we decided in advance to keep the wood grain textures consistent with the pieces they already have in the house. 3 layers of paint and a huge mess later…the wood grain was gorgeous.
Things were really started to take shape on the body of the console. This is after two coats of paint. You can see how the color goes from navy to darker gray as the light in the room changes so keep that in mind if you chose a color like this.
They were also started to take shape on the top too as we layered a coat of dark wax of a coat of clear wax in lieu of stain.
There are so many storage options inside this beast which means storing anything from books to records to electronic game systems to TV cables will be a breeze.
Once we had the top of the console table and the body finished we decided to amp the boho chic vibe up just a bit with leather pulls. My sister had pinned similar pulls a few months ago and I knew they would be perfect for this piece.
We’re considering two different options as far as styling around the TV is concern so for now I just imagined it paired with a gallery wall of different baskets.
Even now this is one of the craziest transformations we’ve ever pulled off. Truly it doesn’t even look like the same piece, right?
I just can’t get over it.
I delivered the “new” media cabinet to Hawk’s Ridge this past weekend just in time for my sister’s birthday. She loved it. While we still have a lot of projects to complete in the living room, we’re well on our way to making a big difference in how the space looks, feels and functions. I can’t wait!
See you guys back here tomorrow. We actually made those leather pulls from materials we picked up at our local craft supply big box store. I’ll show you how we made them in case you’re looking for a budget friendly alternative too.Until then, I’ll see you on Facebook, on Instagram on Pinterest.
Many blessings,
CoCo
I really like that color Coco. Beautiful transformation.
I appreciate you, Mary Beth! This color has turned out to be one of my favorites for sure. I’m hoping we’ll be able to use it in the office makeover too. It’s so moody! Hugs, CoCo
Love this gorgeous color CoCo! Your sister is one lucky girl. I would take this in a heartbeat.
You’re so sweet, Sarah, thank you so much! Hugs, CoCo
Hey CoCo – this is a fabulous transformation. You are totally right…it doesn’t even look like the same piece! You have one lucky sister!
Do ya’ll remember when I brought this home and swore my spleen was messed up because this beast was so heavy! I can’t believe it’s been that long! This is definitely going down as one of my favorite makeovers too. Hugs, CoCo
Such an incredible makeover, CoCo! I love the leather pulls, too – so unique! Great job!
I appreciate you so much, Emily, thank you! It’s so crazy how this piece doesn’t even look the same, right? I gotta give all the credit for those leather pulls to my little sister LiLi. She has a unique style that I treasure. Sending you hugs, CoCo
