Breakfast Nook Refresh Reveal

Today, we’re excited to share our breakfast nook refresh reveal with you! I’m pretty sure this one is going to stick ?  If you’ve been following us for a while now, you may have seen this space undergo lots of changes over the years. 

It’s one of our favorite spots in the house to decorate because it’s just off the kitchen.

The large windows frame our back patio and nearly every day we catch a glimpse of the flowers blooming, the turtles feeding or the marsh bunnies hopping around.   

Most of our other breakfast nook makeovers have been due to our style changing or wanting a fresh look to welcome a new season. 

But this breakfast nook refresh was born out of necessity. 

The Reason for the Breakfast Nook Refresh

In May, we participated in the One Room Challenge to give one of the bedrooms a complete makeover.  We’re big supporters of shopping the house before buying new items to help stretch our budgets and we know so many of you guys are too.

During that makeover, we decided to take the wall art and the curtains from the breakfast nook and use them in the bedroom.  Thankfully, they were a perfect fit!

As you can imagine, that left the breakfast nook a blank slate. I’ve learned over the years not to rush to decorate a space just to try and get it finished though. 

Getting a Plan Together

For the past few months, the breakfast nook has remained virtually untouched as we’ve been waiting for inspiration to strike. I finally found it when I fell in love with this rug from Birch Lane.  I scooped it up when it went on sale over the summer and the rest, as they say, is history. 

That day, I also pulled a design board of ideas together and sourced new artwork as well. 

Just a quick tip, almost all the major retailers have some sort of sale around the holidays, even in the summer.  If there is something you have your eye on try buying it around those dates.  Sometimes, you’ll even be able to double up on coupons or use discount codes for things like free shipping as well.

Bringing all the Elements Together

With the rug and artwork out of the way, the last item I needed to source for the breakfast nook refresh was the fabric for the curtains.  I’ll be totally honest with you guys, sourcing fabric online is not always easy. The color on your computer screen can vary slightly from the actual color or colors of the fabric. 

Another quick tip to consider when doing a room refresh is to order a fabric sample before making a final decision. Especially, if the fabric supplier provides that service option and you have the time to wait. You can usually order a fabric sample at a very reasonable price depending on the fabric designer. 

Taking this extra step gives you the chance to make sure the fabric matches your color palette and will go a long way in helping you achieve the space you envision.  Several times, I’ve placed a large fabric order only to wish I had taken the extra time to order a fabric sample, so learn from my mistake, ok? 

Ultimately, I ordered this windowpane fabric because it’s super neutral.  In fact, it can go in any of the rooms in our home if we decide to change things up later.

Adding Farmhouse Details with Piper Classics

Once all the basics of the breakfast nook refresh were in place, we set about adding a few farmhouse details. 

During the One Room Challenge makeover, Piper Classics was an amazing sponsor and these chambray ruffled chair pads is what originally brought me to their website. They also offer the same style chambray ruffled chair pads in a lighter color called natural that is really pretty too. 

We love the Annabelle Bedding Suite we chose for the bedroom makeover and Piper Classics was kind enough to send me the chair pads during that time as well. 

The chair pad material is sturdy, the ruffles hang nicely, and the cushion is very comfortable.  The color is more of a dark taupe gray than say a French linen gray.  But, again, the color of the chambray ruffled chair pad we chose is super neutral which makes them very easy to use all around the house. 

We love these bows, don’t you? They definitely steal the show!  

Decorating with Thrifted Finds

Another farmhouse detail we added was the large brown and white transferware bowl which was part of our latest finds from Renningers .  It was a steal at $20 and I added a short white candlestick underneath it to help give it some height. 

I set the rest of the table with some of the dishes from our growing collection of brown and white transferware to complement the bowl. 

And after spending so much time at my childhood home, Loblolly Manor, a few weeks ago I couldn’t imagine filling the bowl with anything other than the pears from my Granny’s pear tree.

She would have been tickled pink at how many pears we got this year.  The tree was loaded with fruit!

As far as styling the French Linen hutch and cabinet we keep our produce baskets in goes, I left that all up to my Mom.  I don’t know how she does it, but she is so good at styling shelves!

You’ll recognize the large white platter, also from our latest treasure trail finds, and our diy faux milk glass cake stands too.

We kept the coffee bar super simple. 

The old diploma was another Renningers find and the crepe myrtles are currently blooming on our property.

Even now, I can hardly believe how we created this breakfast nook refresh by adding a few simple changes like artwork, curtains, a rug and chambray ruffled chair pads. The neutral color palette is perfect for our cottage inspired home.

Breakfast Nook Decorating Take Aways

1. Consider shopping sales to help stretch your budget especially if you have multiple items to buy.
2. Order fabric samples prior to purchasing yards of fabric
3. Choose a breakfast nook color palette consistent with the colors you already have in the rest of your home. The colors should complement each other not compete.
4. Mix new finds with thrifted finds for a layered look.
5. If you like to frequently change out your artwork, consider framing inexpensive posters or canvas prints.
