Soft & Romantic Farmhouse Christmas Dining Room

Today, we’re sharing our soft and romantic farmhouse Christmas dining room!

One of the questions I’m most frequently asked is how to make a dining room feel festive for the holidays without having to leave out your Christmas dishes.

This sentiment is usually followed by thoughts like…

  • “We live here.”
  • “Our house is small. We only have one table and we use it for everything.”
  • “I don’t like the extra clutter.”
  • “I’m not trying to live in a magazine with a staged home.”

Believe me, I totally get it.

To Set or Not to Set…

For one thing, I’m without a doubt a messy creative.

While it might be hard to believe given we like to keep things as tidy as possible around here, sometimes I have projects strewn from the table in the dining room to the table in the breakfast nook.

It’s kind of bananas how quickly all the little piles start adding up and the clutter overwhelms.

And if Christmas dishes get in the way at my house, I know they probably get in the way at your house too.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a dining room table set with pretty Christmas dishes.  My Mom and both of my aunts leave their tables set during the holidays.  They’re all gorgeous and make you feel welcome the minute you walk through the door.

So, if Christmas dishes are your jam and you look forward to setting a beautiful tablescape each year – I say leave them out and enjoy your fully decorated Christmas dining room.

Honestly, we normally leave our dishes out every year.  In fact, you can see our Christmas inspired dining room here if you haven’t had to a chance to check it out yet.

This year we’ve taken a completely different approach to our holiday décor. And in the process, we’ve created a soft and romantic farmhouse Christmas dining room.

One that is layered with lots of greenery, pink satin ribbons, a cozy throw and a simple Christmas centerpiece.

There’s not a dish in sight.

If you’re looking to create a festive dining room that feels warm and inviting when your guests enter your home without leaving all your Christmas dishes out, concentrate on these decorating tips and tricks.

Buy or Make a Seasonal Centerpiece

We brought this thrifted deer home with us from the mountains one year and we’ve literally used it all over the house.  Festive centerpieces are fairly easy to create especially if you already have a good start and a holiday item you love.

Seasonal centerpieces should:

  • Be appropriate in size and scale to the rest of your dining room
  • Complement your Christmas color palette
  • Be easy to work around should you choose to set up a food buffet around the table or host a festive dinner

Layer Seasonal Greenery

We add to our collection of seasonal greenery each year when it goes on sale.  I love the scent of fresh pine and cedar. But it’s pretty warm in Florida year-round which means all sorts of bugs (like ticks) are prevalent when trying to clip fresh greenery from the yard.

Unless you live in an area where you know your greenery is going to be pest free, save yourself a lot of time and buy realistic looking faux greenery or pick up seasonal greenery from a local nursery.

Seasonal greenery includes:

  • Garlands
  • Swags
  • Floral bushes or picks
  • Clippings from the yard (just make sure they’re free from pest before bringing them inside)

Add Cozy Texture

We’re all about cozy texture! Especially this year when we’re excited to get out and soak in all the holiday season has to offer.

Cozy texture can include lots of different items that are budget friendly (we used a thrifted blanket) and readily available.

For example:

  • Cable knit or crochet blankets
  • Faux fur
  • Velvet
  • Leather
  • Tweed
  • Plaid
  • Satin

Play Up Details with Color, Print or Light

Almost everyone I know has some sort of buffet or hutch in their dining room so play up those details and collections that are important to you.

A few ideas include:

  • Showcasing a treasured collection of dishes
  • Adding pops of color with ribbon
  • Using ornaments as budget friendly way to add color, sparkle or softness
  • Creating an intimate ambience with candles or fairy lights
  • Adding greenery swags or wreaths to existing pieces of wall art

A Final Tip to Create a Soft & Romantic Farmhouse Christmas Dining Room

My final tip to consider when created a soft and romantic farmhouse dining room or decorating your home for the holidays is to relax and enjoy the process.

I know it’s not always easy. Especially, when we feel like we need to “go all out” with seasonal decorating.

But I can assure you, the decorating police is not going to come to your home and give you a citation.

Put on a big pot of potpourri, crank up the Christmas tunes, make yourself a latte then set about making your Christmas decorations as perfect or as perfectly imperfect as you want them to be.

Leave your Christmas dishes out or wait until you’re hosting Christmas dinner to pull them all out.  That’s the beauty of creating a soft and romantic farmhouse Christmas dining room like this one, it will be ready whenever you are!

I hope these tips on creating a soft and romantic farmhouse Christmas dining room without have to leave out your holiday dishes have helped.  Let us know how you plan to make your dining room festive this year!
