How to Create a Thanksgiving Vignette
We’re sharing how to create a Thanksgiving vignette as we team up with fellow creatives for the Autumn on a Tray Blog Tour hosted by Katherine of Katherine’s Corner.
If you’re coming over from Rachelle’s blog, My Hubbard Home, welcome we’re happy to have you here!
One of the questions I’m asked a lot is how to decorate a kitchen island. Our kitchen island is primarily used for meal prep, so we basically keep the décor to one corner while our stand mixer holds court on the other.
I know some of you probably have a bigger island like my parents have though so I thought I would share how to create a Thanksgiving vignette for a large kitchen island.
This same idea could also be used for a buffet, breakfast bar, or if you live in a house with an open floor plan and want to create “seasonal moments” around the house too though.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create a quick and easy Thanksgiving vignette…
How to Create a Thanksgiving Vignette Supplies:
- Large, Tray, Basket or Platter
- Turkey Soup Tureen (or something else with height)
- Small Books or Boards
- Small Cake Stand
- Decorative Thanksgiving Accents (we used pumpkins, corn and raffia)
- Wreath
- Wreath Holder
- Flower Bunches (we used 2)
- Books
- Burlap Feed Sack (you could also use burlap material from the craft supply store)
How to Create a Thanksgiving Vignette Steps:
Gather your supplies and make sure your tray (we used a basket made from water hyacinth) is clean, dry, and free from dirt and debris.
Place a small stack of books or wooden boards in the far-right corner of your tray. You’ll definitely want the books to be really stable so they can safely hold your tureen or decorative Thanksgiving accent.
Then place your wreath stand between the books and the far left corner. I gave my Mom her wreath stand back before I agreed to do the Autumn on a Tray Blog Hop so we’ll have to pretend just a bit.
Once your book or board stack is stable, add your turkey soup tureen or another seasonal decorative item that has height.
Next, add your small cake stand to the Thanksgiving vignette. It should be parallel to the wreath stand.
Place flowers around the edge of your tray.
You might need to bundle a few together or allow the book stack to help keep them in place. I even had to bend a few of my stems.
Once you have all the flowers in place, lay a piece of burlap or a burlap feed sack over the stems to cover them. Be sure to tuck in the edges too!
Add raffia, pumpkins, and corn (or other seasonal decorative accents you have on hand) to the top of your small cake stand.
Finally, carefully hang your wreath.
Other Ideas to Consider…
I know not everyone has a turkey soup tureen at their disposal, so I wanted to show you how simple it was to use this same idea with other pieces.
This is what the Thanksgiving vignette would like if you switched the turkey out for a brown and transferware pitcher.
And this is what it would look like using a stack of heirloom pumpkins
Sometimes it takes trying a few different ideas until you get a look you love so don’t be afraid to experiment.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is to vary the height of the elements you have on your tray, layer in a bit of texture then add something that highlights nature.

Such sweet and kind words, Janette, thank you so much! A harvest festival definitely sounds like fun. There is a TON of prep work that goes into the Thanksgiving holiday, I’m glad we get to enjoy it for the entire weekend. After the past two years of dealing with the pandemic, we could all use a few extra hugs 🙂 Hope your weekend is a special one, CoCo
Wow, CoCo, I love them all. You have such a gift for working in soft colors that whisper sweetly to me. It’s always a treat to visit your blog.
I think I need a brown transferware pitcher like the one on the second tray 🙂

Rachelle
I appreciate that so much, Rachelle, thank you! I’ve been trying to collect brown and white transferware pieces whenever I see them because they’re so hard to come by now. I found that one in an an antique store while we were on vacation and immediately fell in love 😍 Sending you hugs for a happy week, CoCo

So pretty! Thanks for all the great ideas. I love changing things up for the holidays and seasons…am going to try some of your tips. Thought I think Thanksgiving will be just the two of us again this year ( sister and brother in law both tested positive this week….) we have SO much to be thankful for and will enjoy the day.
You are very welcome, Ann! I’m so sorry to hear about your brother-in-law and sister having Covid. I swear every time I feel like things are going back to normal, Covid starts creeping into the mix again. I definitely hope they feel better soon and have a successful recovery. Hugs for a happy week, CoCo
Coco, You have done such a lovely job of showing a step by step way to build a beautiful vignette! Sometimes we forget that others don’t know the tricks like how to elevate one item with the books. I love the soft look of your display! Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving!
Thank you so much, Chloe! It’s been fun to add soft pops of color throughout the house this Fall. As you know most everything in Florida is green year-round so we definitely have to make our own magic. Sending you and your family lots of hugs for a blessed Thanksgiving too, CoCo
All of these options are beautiful! You make it look so easy. Thanks for sharing the step by step process.
