Easy Ways to Decorate with Frames

Picking up old frames has become just as much a weakness as picking up brown and white transferware dishes whenever I’m out on the treasure trail. 

I literally have to stop myself and say,

• “Can I use this in multiple spaces in my home?”
• “Do I have room for this right now?”
• “Is this something I LOVE or something I like right now because it’s less than $5?”

Oh man, you guys, the struggle is real!

Though I’ve definitely learned how to curtail most of my treasure hoarding ways over the years, there are some items, like frames, that are worth considering because they can be used in so many different ways.

Framing a Door Knocker

Recently, my Mom found this fox door knocker and fell in love.  Despite not being able to use it on her front door she couldn’t walk away and called to see if I had any ideas to make it a piece of wall art. 

As luck would have it, I had just gone through my frame stash and found this oval beauty.

Since it had previously been painted black and the fox was brass, I decided to spray paint a light coat of metallic gold on the bottom. 

Then I allowed the metallic gold to dry completely before lightly spray painting a layer of metallic bronze on top of the gold.

While the bronze layer was still tacky, I blotted around the edges of the frame with an old cotton tee-shirt so the metallic gold layer would show.

It turned out to be a fabulous match and an easy way to decorate with frames too.  

And I think it’s going to look really beautiful all dressed up for the holidays too!

Antique Picture Frame Advent Calendar 

A few years ago, I made an antique picture frame advent calendar for my bestie S after she took a horrible spill that left her unable to walk for months. 

As you can imagine that Christmas was a tough one and I was trying to find a simple way to lift her spirits. 

I grabbed an old picture frame, a few supplies from the craft store, ornaments, and sweet messages from readers, family, and friends to create this antique picture frame calendar. 

It didn’t take very long to make at all, but it made every day until Christmas a special one.

How to Antique a New Frame

Sometimes you find a really cool antique portrait painting, but the frame looks too new for the painting. 

This is something that can be fixed with just a bit of dark furniture paste wax and Rub N’ Buff.

So, don’t pass it up if you love the picture but hate the frame!

How to Antique a Gold Picture Frame was another “Mom inspired” post that has been one of our most popular posts to date, which totally blows my mind because it was also one of the easiest.

Frame an Inexpensive Poster or Print

If you like to frequently change out your wall art but you’re on a tight budget, consider framing inexpensive posters or prints.  I’ve used this method at my own house for this poster of Queen Elizabeth II

as well as these jockey prints we used in the master bedroom makeover refresh at my parent’s house, Bliss Barracks.

DIY Dry Erase Board

I’m a paper planner kind of girl but I also love being able to look up and quickly see what I have going on each day without the distraction of going through my calendar.   

This DIY Dry Erase Board is another super simple way we keep organized each day.

It was made from an old picture frame with basic supplies we already had in our garage that you probably have in your garage right now too.

Well, I could go on and on about easy ways to decorate with frames, but I don’t want you to miss what these fabulous ladies are sharing!
